Funny thing is that the masses dictate the market.I too bought a SUV for the wife as a daily and weekend cruiser.Quite practical really.... :wwww:

I don't mean to be rude but while an suv maybe practical there is far more safer alternatives. I find 4wds give people a false sense of security

The risk alone of rolling one is far greater than any hatch/sedan let alone the greater damage they cause to pedestrians and other cars. If they go off road I've got not problem with that but when they're strictly for running around town. I personally think they are can be very dangerous

But that's just my opinion

They reckon that more than 150 000 people will be affected in Adelaide (either directly or indirectly) by GM closing

That's a ferkin big chunk of Adelaides workforce and their families

So what does everyone think we'll see in 2017 / 18.....Comaro or something else

Alot of Aussies have blood on their hands over destroying the Aussie car industry. Ranging from Tony Abbot who thinks it the right decision to let it die down to the public who would rather buy a Korean throw away car or a highly depreciating Merc/BMW to Expensive Daewoo and Ford who could have done alot more to keep this market vibrant.

A country without a car industry will suffer bad down the track.

not trying to get political as I hate politics, but love how the finger is now being pointed at Abbot, he's been in the job for 5 minutes, this rot has been going on for years, it's just happened on his shift so he gets the blame for it????

yeah ratter its unfortunate

Free trade killed the car industry and that was put into action by keating.. im not saying its a bad thing but as globalisation really takes over from protectionistic ways and there isn't much we can do about. we will continue to lose workers and industries regardless of industry assistance or not, however this isn't necessarily a bad thing with the right investment and knowledge new industries will be created. we need to innovate and create jobs not just protect them and dig stuff out of the ground. for this to happen we need proper targeted investment into key industries such as agriculture and energy. the cheaper and easier we can obtain electricity. the easier it will become for our society to move around, do and make things. its a real shame though our politicians cant see something as simple as that.. its even more of a shame the majority of the NSW electricity grid is powered by black coal.. we should have nuclear.. but that's a topic I could spend hours on so I will leave it there

I do feel sorry for the workers at Expensive Daewoo and the flow on effects it will have to the suppliers and their jobs

I agree ratter.. It sucks..

A perfect example is the US.. Every president there has had to pick up whatever pieces of sh*t were left by their predecessors but somehow the media blames them for everything. People will always blame the man in charge (in governments anyway) no matter who's fault it was the problem got bad.

Govvy offered GM a pretty friggin big deal to stay. GM cracked the chits and pulled the plug because the deal wasn't as big as they wanted it to be (across 12 years). As a matter of fact I think GM was going anyway. If the handout was of the size they wanted I reckon they would have stayed until 2017 getting handouts and then crack the sh*ts after that about wanting more. Manufacturing in australia thanks to our unions is not viable like it is everywhere else in the world.

And for anyone who thinks that the factory workers were on a 'fair wage', I'd be interested to see what you think about some other wages around the country..

Most people are set in their ways and no matter what I say, they will never change their mind, and im ok with that, im just glad a discussion is happening
I say nuclear you think fukishima, three mile island and chenobyl etc
while all of these was/are terrible tragedies and is a totally understandable association that's not what im talking about when I say nuclear
When I say nuclear I mean Generation 4+ reactors with waste from enriched uranium lasting a couple centuries rather than millenia.
But where I really think the future lies over the next decade is the development of thorium based reactors where the thorium reactor does not require the vessel to be pressurized and because it operates at a very low pressure there is near to zero chance of a fukishima style meltdown occur (fukishimas reactors melted down and what caused the problems was that it got so hot in the reactor cores that highly pressurised water molecule began to split into h2 and 02 and anyone familiar with the hindenburg or fukishima knows what happens next). Because thorium in its raw earth form or even outside of the reactor is inhert its as safe to hold as your remote or a bar of soap. its 4 times more abundant in the earth as uranium and the real winner for me is an incredible statistic comparing coal/uranium and thorium. 1 tonne of thorium generates as much power as 200 tonnes of uranium but that is nothing to the amount of coal. approx. 3500000 tonnes of coal it would take to make the equivalent amount of power 1 tonne of thorium could produce.
Compared with coal 100000 miners have been killed in the usa in last century alone. as practices have been getting safer its gone down to approx. 30 miners per year. however the WHO has estimated coal air pollution is accountable for 1 million deaths worldwide annually. not to forget the amount of asthma related issues as well
Coal as a fuel is dirty not only producing co2 but also produces high amount of sulfur dioxide, nitric oxides, hydrogen cyanide and sulfur nitrate just to name a few
not only that but coal also contains trace amount of heavy metals such as mercury, molybdenum and chromium just to name a few. while this is only in trace amounts its still put into the environment.

Australia is in the middle of its continental plate so minimal risk of volcanoes and earthquakes, also we are in a relatively safe country with a stable government and somewhat happy citizens.

If something isn't done about our looming energy crisis we are well and truly screwing over our future generations and the only way I see this happening is if we put an end to coal power plants and develop a safer and cleaner alternative that can provide baseload power. The only 2 ways I see this happening is via nuclear fission (nuclear) or fusion (hydrogen atoms fusing together ie the suns way of generating energy)

I dont think I can change your mind dags and I dont think youlll change my mind either and that's ok but like I said as long as the discussion is happening im happy

If anyone has actually read my boring novel im sorry but im just passionate about energy, technology and facts
