Surely the T56 shifts can't be as bad as the T5. Everyone bags it saying the 2-3 shift is slow and it won't change easily from 5th to 3rd. How do they compare.

How about we stop this argument about the shift quality in the T56, as used in the Ford.

Within the month I'll know, and myself and others will test it out, and report back then.

LOK II you have had the 6 speed for a while, what do you think of the shift quality is it better or worse than the 5 speed ?

Why so sensitive on this issue ? I have driven many a car with the T56 trans and the shift quality is at best ordinary, that's not to say that the trans is not strong...

Not sensitive, just wanting some details. You keep bagging the shift quality, yet you don't give details. I will freely admit that the shift quality in ANY LSI T56 equipped car is nowhere near as good as it should be, regardless of aftermarket shifters, etc. This is due to the fact that it has an extension shifter on it which is manufactured by a third party. This leads to vagueness and sometimes difficulty in getting gears. Many people may be happy with it, but the quality is nowhere near as good as a factory Tremec direct coupled stick assy. Therefore, if your experience of the T56 is mainly based on these vehicles, then what you have seen is clearly a poor example of the product, and your opinion could be stated as being fair comment for these particular vehicles only.

My "sensitivity" as you call it would be mirrored by yourself if I were to drive a poorly performing "brand X" upgraded car, and then proceed to bag ALL upgrade packages based on this experience.

Maybe I have been spoilt. I have owned and tested the M3, M5,993 twin turbo porsche, 996 GT3 porsche, boxter S, current STI, current evo 8, current Nissan 350Z and these 6 speeds shift quickly and without hesitation and makes the T56 feel very ordinary in comparison.

As I stated previously I much prefer the shift quality of the current 5 speed in the xr8 to that of the T56 in cars that I have driven. I am not saying that the T56 should not be considered as a trans upgrade for the xr6t.

I appreciate what you are saying about the T56 in the Expensive Daewoo and that's fair comment. What I am looking for is the best trans upgrade that is affordable to suit the xr6t, that may well prove to be the T56.

I just want to explore all practical options, that why I started this thread in the first place to get feedback from the guys on the forum.

My question is this...

When are these cars going to come out with a gearbox that feels smooth and is strong?

Hopefully October this year in BAII?? At least in the auto flavour anyway!

It will be interesting to see what manual box is specified in the FPV T to be released at the Melbourne Motor Show. This may give an indication of what manual box will be available in BAII. My mail says that there will be no auto option, at least not until the 6 speed is available.

I've also heard that the tunnel is being modified for BAII, so we can only keep our fingers crossed as to what the manual box maybe.

Maybe a couple of solutions albeit expensive!

Firstly Richmond gear (Old Doug Nash) make 4,5 & 6 speed transmissions, the street five speed is only rated @ 450ft/lbs don't know what the race five speed is rated at. The only other problem is that in both the 5 & 6 speeds 5th gear is 1:1 only.

Secondly Jerico transmissions make a 5 speed at a cost of US$5,500.00 with 900 ratios available.

The other option might be to keep the T5 with perhaps getting aftermarket internals. Hollinger? Probably just as expensive as going the full gearbox replacement though?
