Guys, I been thinking what is a reasonable price to pay for a 6 speed manual trans upgrade, and have any members on the forum seriously considered this as an option. I would like to have your thoughts so post away all feedback is welcome.

I figure people wont want to may more than $5,000 as a complete kit.

My gut feeling however is that a fully engineered kit with a T56 will be up around the $8,000 mark.

If you classify broken you mean crunching into 5th,

there are quite a few of us.

P.S come up with a price below $6000 and delete the speed limiter and I'll take one.

BCLs (Brian) sounded pretty crook when he let me have a drive the other week (It was already like that, I didn't cause it OK!). Not crunching but bearing noises and it was hard to get into gear. I believe he has a T56 on order already from somewhere.

Mine wouldn't downshift 5th to 3rd. I had it replaced then the new box only had 2,000kms and started to crunch into 5th and all gears are loose. approx 30mm slack in all gears.

No I dont mean crunching into gear this is obviously a synchro ring problem , I am asking if anyone has actually broken a gear or a cluster gear or had a big gearbox failure of some description.

Peter,

Prior to my Nizpro upgrade the box did not crunch, but shift quality I considered to be poor from day 1.

My gearbox started falling apart at around 300rwkw, in the interim stages of tuning, and I’m now running a lot more power than that. I fully expected the T5 to last a while; based on comments from various people that it was a strong box.

Oh, and the clutch slipped at 280rwkw, and was replaced.

It is now drivable, whines very loud (even when not under load), and very hard to get into gear, and getting progressively worse. I can select every gear, and it does not crunch. However, on the freeway I often cannot downchange from 5 to 4. It will not last, and an upgrade is mandatory. Currently I drive my car no more than 1 day a week.

The nominal rating of the T5 is 447NM, and if a stock car has a torque of 450NM, then my car is rated around 765NM, based on a torque increase of 70% (based on dyno graphs) at only 3200 revs. For me the T5 replacement must happen, and it must be very strong.

I am happy to dump the T5, as I never liked it, especially when you compare it to the jap boxes around.

How much would I pay? $5-$8 was my expectation originally.

I have researched the matter, and there are very few options available, either T56 or changing to auto (you can refer to my thread at http://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/index.ph...wtopic=8495&hl= ).

As you are no doubt aware Wal Woods does 6-speed T56 conversions, and has done so for the AU XR8, and now the BA, and he has an excellent reputation.

The matter is not just about the gearbox; you must consider the gearbox and clutch as a package. In terms of the gearbox, ideally you want the shifter to come through in the same spot. You want good ratios, which are suited to the Ford turbo. I want something with good shift quality, and which shifts much better than the T5. 2-3 shifts must be quick and smooth, which I can’t do in the T5.

The clutch replacement will be added to the price. I don’t want a pressure plate pressure that is too heavy, as I currently have. With the T56 I have thus opted for a twin-plate clutch, which a more expensive option, but which should be much easier to drive, as it will be a smooth change with a bit heavier pedal effort. I don’t want a single plate clutch that requires a substantially beefed up pressure plate, that will be less easy to drive.

The stock XR6T T5 has ratios 2.95/1.94/1.34/1/0.73.

The T56 suggested as the option for the XR6T has ratios 2.97/2.07/1.43/1/0.8/0.62, which would work quite well.

It uses the same internals as a Mustang COBRA R.

Attached is a sample photo of a T56 shaft compared to a T5; quite a difference in size.

My T56 upgrade will happen in the next month.

Why is it that nearly eveyone is hellbent on replacing the T5 with a six speed? If the T5 is that bad and needs replacing why just replace it with a stronger 5 speed?

IMHO a sixth gear is a complete waste of time and money unless of course you live in the NT!
