Zf 1St Gear Downshift At Low Speed Delay

Hi.

I'm wondering if all FG's and maybe even BF with the ZF6 do this, seems a bit weird or it must be the way the shift schedule is programmed.

My FG XR6T will stay in 2nd or 3rd gear by the feels of it even when slowing down to a real low speed like 10km/h, it doesn't kick back into first when I reach a near stop, so when I hit the gas it goes nowhere and takes time to shift down into 1st and then it pulls like a big block.

Only when coming to a complete stop it shifts into 1st, have you guys experienced the same, just trying to rule out it's not playing up, personally I'd prefer it to shift into 1st Earlier.

When the car is cold also, it seems that on take off, the gearbox stalls itself up, goes nowhere and makes noise for a second and then pulls and spins the wheels, only happens when the car is cold. Could this be a gearbox issue? A Ford Tuner around my area mentioned it's the LSD causing this when cold but I'd like some second opinions

Thanks.

Yeah Boris mine does the same in regards to avoiding first gear...until you try to move off from say a give way sign you only juuuust rolled to a stop at. If you don't know better/expect it you press the pedal even more and it ends up hauling ass when it hits first, which looks dumb and could probably earn you a hoon law...hence I drive in manual mode almost all the time and avoid letting the box shift itself, unless I'm cruising ultra lazily.

Not sure about the second thing. Mine is now fine cold (since rebuild, before it used to yo-yo the revs). I don't give it much sudden throttle cold though, I let it accelerate smoothly.

Also you've seen this right?

Yep, the first gear lurch is part of the programme, it wont select first till it sees 0 rpm when the vehicle has stopped completly.

Like SteveR said, just drive in manual mode. The second issue sounds interesting, have you had the gearbox serviced at all?

It's one of the reasons I'm going for the ZF tune when I get my mods/tune done.

Taking off from lights, intersection etc sometimes it's in second, sometimes in first - especially annoying turning right 100m from home each morning into a busy road - it either slowly piddles round the corner in 2nd or (a little bit more throttle) lurches back into first and screeches round the turn.

The second issue - sounds similar to what happens to me when cold from a standstill with a decent amount of lock on the steering (eg - after reversing out of the drive and about to go forward)

Yes, it tends to do it more so when the steering wheel is angled, only on cold start, I'm thinking could it be something with the steering wheel angle sensors that give some feedback that the ECU is acting, or also a mechanical thing that is causing it. I'd like to find out why it happens and what can be done about it and whether everybody experiences the same thing, the stalling up when taking off from a standstill especially when car is colder. I don't know whether it's even the ABS kicking in by error and holding the brakes so the car cant move or something up with the gearbox/converter or diff.

After reading the Lurch website it seems like only Issue one has been fixed, which Don't seem to affect Fords, well I've never noticed it.

Hawlass - No I have never had this box serviced, the car has only done about 12,000km Since new.

Steve about first issue thanks for that, seems that all the ZF Falcons do it, I only sometimes manually shift down to 1 so I can get it to shift into 1st without Delay, I don't really like using the Tiptronic I find the engine will rev out quicker than the box can respond to your geartap and with 6 gears you got to be tapping it a lot.

I might do some more testing about the delay when taking off from standstill when cold, I'll see if it does it right after the car is first turned on or only at certain times.

I would appreciate if anybody else could share their experiences about the stalling on take off when cold.
