Heya guys.. 1st time poster..Few questions..

Whats peoples opinions on buying already modified or doing it yourself..??

Im about to purchase my first G6ET and am tossing up between a few options..

Obviously there are many variables here and id like to do it as cheaply as possible to obtain the end result with the least amount of compromise.. Daily(ish) driven, reliable with around 380-400kw as end figure..

For now im budgeting around $26-7K...

1/ Buy a cheap stocker with high Ks on it and purchase a stage 3 or so kit for about 10K to add to it...

I can do a full rebuild later down the track anyways so the high Ks dont really bother me at this stage..or will it not last with the add-ons and the high Ks?? This way I know whats been done and usually the stockers arent raped like an already built car..

2/ Buy 1 with all the mods I intend on doing to it already done and then worry about the rebuild later..?

3/ Buy a mint low Ks stocker for money between 1/ and 2/ and just add the bolt-ons without worrying about a rebuild..?

As said im new to these cars and dont really know what goes wrong where and at what age, Klm level, power range etc..

I do understand they can hold a lot of power with an unopened block, so yeah what age does things usually start to deteriorate internally ? and what goes wrong ?

U kids seem pretty friendly and helpful here so hopefully others actual experiences can point me in the right direction..

Cheers :D

You can basically get one that's modified for the same price as a stock one, mod's don't have much in the way of resale value.

I wouldn't go high kms unless you really want too, because at 400 you should be able to handle the power with a good tune and maintenance without needing a rebuild

Better off with lower kms and mods are up to you. Some modded cars have been thrashed to hell and back, some have been serviced ever few thousand kms including major services being done quite regularly (which is better than most stock cars). If going modded make sure you're aware of all the mods on the car and find out who the tuner is and give them a call, majority will give you an honest opinion of the car (unless it's like a best mates) and plus they'll be able ot look after your retunes etc aswell

Cool thanx for the advice so far guys..

Iv built countless other cars and always said I wont do it again but when buying anything ya really have to be wary of how its been treated.. Low Ks and lightly modded seems to be the way to go at this time.. I will def check service history for anything that can help me in seeing what condition its been kept in.. and by saying 400kw I mean pretty much Max power I will want out of it (I have other toys for the strip).. so if the blocks take 400 reliably then that's great..

Also is there a "magic number" where things start to go pear shaped ?? cause id like to keep it getting to that..

I mean boxes blow, diffs bushes go, tailshafts and stuff like that and it all goes downhill with regards to reliability and finding weaknesses.. ???

350 everything is unbreakable in a fg (well kinda). 400 may cause issues with all u listed lol

I'm talking 98 as well. If your running e85 and stay way from the drags, your motor should last and gearbox diff and axles will be fine at 400 odd

Awesome Thanx Gaz.. It will never be "flogged" but id like the thing to hold together when I do feel the need to mash the go pedal..

I have a car on E85 atm and its a PITA allround.. regardless of its benefits..

This will be a strictly 98car as power is well achievable with pump gas..

OK guys I joined the club today FINALLY after a long search and a few stuff arounds :/

Ended up with a 2011 Silhouette with Cashmere model with 70Ks for under $23K.. :)

Still under New car warranty for a few months so ill sort out any issues in the coming months before I begin serious modding..

Quite happy with the purchase rather than a 2008 which I was mainly searching for, for the coupla K cheaper..

I can see this getting outta hand VERY quickly :D lol

Im familar with the search function so hopefully I dont have to ask TOO many questions haha :)

I was looking at that exact same car, very nice buy, gotta be quick it seems :) I'm tossing up between black and beige interior. Looking forward to seeing the mods you do as I'll be in the same boat soon
