Thanks for all the info guys, this is exactly what I was after. Bit of a back story as to why... My uncle has had two ba V8's that have both been tuned by the box's standard tunes and has never had dramas. So when I tell him and my old man about wanting to get a custom tune done for around $1400-$1500 they say I'm stupid and it's a waste and they've already got tunes in them! I never had a leg to stand on, now I've got info! :stirthepot:

Alot of people in the V8 scene use generic tunes.. A bit of reading online will show that this isn't always safe..

Seen quite a few horror stories there..

In saying that though a turbo car is subject to a whole lot of different stresses/tuning requirements so the need for a tune to be car specific is alot higher than the V8 boys who are just getting tuned for a new air intake and a big exhaust..

Remember with the turbo you're dealing with increased boost which changes a lot of other things, v8's don't have that to deal with... Just tell them you'll get a generic tune if they pay for a new motor when it goes bang lol

For what you will pay for a generic tune and flash box you are better off getting a VCM suite tune from an reputable tuner. Might cost you the same money give or take $100-$200.

am I reading "custom tuned" but flashed to the ecu, without xcal.

Vcm tune, no need for a flash box. Plugged directly into the obd2 port and tuned

Sort of like Ford do ECU updates to your car...just write straight over the top of the existing tune. No swapping tunes, but you rarely need that in my experience.
