Hey guys,

Had my car tuned a while ago (as many know) and it made 294rwkw at 14psi. It's an FG xr6t. Mods include:

Rapid cooler and turbo side

ID1000's

PW surge and 460 pump

3.5" dump and 100 cell cat

So today we finally dropped the exhaust from in front of the cat and run it up on the dyno and it made 313rwkw without any changes to the tune. Now my dilemma..

I spoke to the place that installed my exhaust and said the cat they supplied didn't perform up to what I asked (I wanted a cat that would flow 300 minimum). Now they are willing to come to the party but only if there is considerable gains to be made otherwise they won't waste their money (fair enough). So spoke to tuner and he won't guarantee me that a good new cat (ie venom, ballistic etc) will give me a definite power gain because he believes the catback will still be holding it back to some extent (I told him I'v seen dozens make 310rwkw+ with stock catback but refuses to believe me). So I asked if I replaced the cat and catback would I make that 315rwkw and he said he's unsure and will only guarantee it will pick up power, but that could just be 5rwkw.

If I was to replace the cat with 5" 100 cell venom or even one of Mick's 5" 200 cell cats, do you think the car will make 310+? Or is the venom cat and stock catback (one mufffler deleted) going to restrict it by 15rwkw compared to no exhaust (as it showed today). I'm not saying my tuners wrong at all but I thought the whole idea of running up today was to give me an idea of how much I could make by upgrading the cat (again) but no clear answer

Any help would be appreciated guys!

did they drop the catback first to see what difference, if any it made?

they may be correct, but if you have the worlds best cat but there is still a restriction in the system, then things may not change much at all, unfortunately for you, this is a example of things can go wrong and it happens quite often

No they didn't! I thought they were going to do catback then with cat but that didn't happen. The idea of today was to find out if the exhaust was a restriction definitely and whether there would be any considerable gains to be made by changing parts, unfortunately that's not what happened...

So if for example I had a punched out cat (not going to happen) would I be looking at around that 313 figure given the stock catback, or do you believe the stock catback would create enough of a restriction to bring that number back down around 300? My tuner seems to believe that the catback just won't make 310+, even with only 1 muffler

This could be a silly question but when the exhaust was dropped could that cause an increase in boost because of less restriction so naturally you would make more power. Or am I completely wrong ??

Yea the extra power was from extra boost, without adjusting the tune spiked to 18psi. But in saying that we tried ramping more boost into when it was tuned but anything more than 14psi it didn't respond well to, no real gains for extra boost.
