I've got clients (different line of business) where if something like that happens I choose to wear the time and fix it myself.

I've got others where I'd charge them only disbursements.

I've got others where I'd charge them double because they annoy me.

In almost all cases though they all know it wasn't my fault but that I'm the one who has to fix it for them.

What I charge them at that point is determined by the relationship they have with me.

In a case like this (new customer, maybe repeat/long term) I'd probably look at only charging what it would cost me to pay the bloke who has to rectify the issue (hourly fee if he's prevented from doing other work fixing this mishap).

If it was someone who'd been trouble then they'd probably been charged my rate for fixing it.

Long time/regular then I would have done it in my spare time for a slab (while they drank half of it watching me do the work)

Basically OP - you got charged what it was worth it to the mech to fix the issue - up to you to accept it or whinge. Strike a relationship with them and they may look after you next time an extra bit needs to be done.

In reality the OP saved money long term having not broken this himself as he would have added the cost of a tow truck to the cost he already sufferred.
