Doesn't matter what hits where, if the vehicle is moving in a given direction and stops suddenly then airbags on the forward edge (in this case the side of the vehicle) will deploy.They are essentially designed to cushion the body from hitting the interior of the car - not to prevent the object (gutter/tree/oncoming vehicle) from hitting the occupant. Doesn't matter what/how the vehicle is stopped. The actual main module sits in front of your gear selector.
