are you sure?

seen a xr near my place do the exact same damage, no air bags. as he only hit gutter.

since when do air bag sensors get fitted to the wheels?

It's an inertia sensor...not a physical switch that detects contact. Doesn't matter what hits where, if the vehicle is moving in a given direction and stops suddenly then airbags on the forward edge (in this case the side of the vehicle) will deploy.

They are essentially designed to cushion the body from hitting the interior of the car - not to prevent the object (gutter/tree/oncoming vehicle) from hitting the occupant.

The sudden stop would have been registered by the SRS computer which deployed the air bags.

Yes Freaky, exactly. Doesn't matter what/how the vehicle is stopped.

The actual main module sits in front of your gear selector. There are also additional sensors behind the front bumper, but the one that does most of the work is right in the centre of the cabin.

there is no sensor in the door, as the others have said, there are different sensors around the car if a certain deceleration G force is met, then the bags will deploy , no matter what part of the car has hit what

Like the frontal airbags; side impact airbags must have a crash sensor to recognize that a crash has accured. These sensors are usually mounted in the front door, the B post, or most are located inside of the rocker panel just below the B post.
