Has anyone rented a car in the UK?

Is an international driving permit required?

I know you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months on an Aus license but is it requisite of the rental company to have an international permit?

Easy enough to get one from any RA outlet but I dont want to have to spend 35 bucks if its not required.

International driving license is just slightly more useful than drawing your picture on a piece of toilet paper, writing your name underneath and trying to hire a car with that.

Your Aussie license is what you'll need.

I hired a car and drive it from Bristol to Heathrow. I didn't require a permit or have one. Just used my WA drivers License and all was ok but that was is 2007. Recently I hired a car in Hawaii from Avis with a WA license and they said the International permit was not required. The guy just asked me if I knew what side of the road to drive on.

Check with the rental company for their policy when your making a booking or get a permit for peace of mind. Just don't leave in in Australia like I did.
