Noob question for you Nelsonian (sort of OT, but seems like the best place to ask you)

Am doing my first track day next month (auto FG) and wondering what gauges I should be keeping an eye on and when to be backing off/cooling down.

First track day, just get out there and enjoy it.:)

Brakes and tyres will be the first thing to slow the fun down.

Is the car stock? FPV with gauges?

Don't do 10 hard laps and force the car into limp mode. It's usually the ZF that overheats first but if you have the stock ZF heat exchanger engine coolant should mirror ZF fluid temps.

I recommend something like this as a gauge. Pre set alarm you set at say 115deg C. That way you never have squint  to look at gauges doing 200kmh, and can enjoy yourself more knowing you aren't destroying the car.

Bare minimum, do an engine oil, brake fluid bleed/change with better front pads/slotted rotors if possible.

Leave the car in PER auto mode. Don't change manually as your brain will need the processing speed for braking and turn in points if first time.

Don't do too many laps at once. Do a cool down lap every few laps, allow temps to settle brakes to cool, expecially  at the end.

(Keep an eye in rear vision mirror and wave people past during cool downs or follow whatever protocol for the particular track)

After session:Open bonnet in pits, don't pull handbrake on.

I can go into a huge amount of more detail keeping temps down, but need more info from you.

I'll be doing my first ever circuit work at a short sprint course in Albany come march for Motul Racewars 2017.  I expect I may end up facing the wrong way at least once but hopefully I can keep it in the right direction!  Really looking forward to it and shouldn't be too hard on the car since it's not multiple consecutive laps.  I'm not even sure we get more than one go!  Was only $75 on top of what I was already paying to enter the drag racing anyway and should finish off my tyres nicely hahaha

Thanks heaps.

Was wondering on changing vs PER as a first timer :) Less to get wrong sounds best.

No gauges, just Torque from OBDII. (figure something better than nothing)

PWR tranny heat exchanger, fresh fluids and 6/4 pots, pads and rotors.

If that app allows you to set alarm then use that feature set at max volume or you wont hear it. Set it before the day as you don't want to be adjusting gauges on the day.

I used to use Torque and Dash Command, then my Aeroforce gauge but never rreally looked at it on track to be honest. Too busy looking ahead on the track. The Watch dog sensor alarms are the only ones I found useful.

Good idea to have a separate pair of track only Race front brake pads if you will be doing more track days. Depends on budget.

A wheel alignment makes a huge difference too.

As much neg camber you can get at front (I use up to 4deg)

1mm toe out at front too.

Depends on your set up.

But what if you're level '5/7' pro at manual shifting the zf like Stever is? I know the ZF drops gears when braking but wouldn't you be able to go a tiny bit easier on the brakes by downshifting yourself since the car doesn't know you're approaching a corner?

Love seeing the glowing brake rotor shots man.

I think I know a few Rexy guys going to that same event Rab. I might pop my head in if I'm free.

It's the driver dynamics high performance and race training day if that's the one.

That's the idea - if it looks like something I continue I'd look at pads and a set of 18's for track rubber.

Am tipping the concentrating on lines and getting them right will do more for me initially than playing with the cogs. Once I'm working them out I'll start to play with when/where for each gear.

I shift manually but only because the car is more settled mid turn in a higher gear. Also depends on your torque levels as the last thing you want is it downshifting at corner exit.

I advise keeping the car in PER for the first few track days though as it keeps the ZF a bit cooler and frees the mind up for more important things like apex hitting and smooth, early throttle application.
