Hey guys, just after some opinions on cams.

I'm planning to replace my valve springs with heavy duty springs and fitting 40 or 60lb injectors/ bigger fuel pump. I will also being checking valves and probably replacing head gasket while im going and get a triple tct tune with controller. Wheb I do this I will obviously be upgrading my intake as well. .. but now I am curious to know if I can put a bigger cam In to make it lumpier and if I can get more power from it etc

I assume the car is not an FG.There is a fair bit of info and debate on the forum on this issue. It seems the general opinion is to leave them alone as the stockers in BF onwards will easily support >350RWKW with factory idle and good power and torque to 5600 - 5700 RPM. Some say the factory FG cams are a good swap but there is no evidence of this in terms of measured figures or cam specs. There are a few U tube video's that show cars with cam swaps and they have a lumpy idle however, all that seems to do is to shift some of the power curve into the top end but really cut the bottom end. I also get the idea that a cam change means a lot of work in terms of re-tuning but I cannot say for sure as I have not done that work. You can mess around with cam timing in the VCM suite tuning software but it does not seem to do a lot in engines making about 500Hp at the flywheel - no change in the power curve that is significant.

IMO, the simple answer to this is spend elsewhere before you do this. If you remove the head get the turbo wastegate ported and do the exhaust. That way the stock turbo will allow you to use as much boost as the engine can handle - have a look thru the build threads for the 300 RWKW cars and see that the good fuel systems, exhausts and intercoolers plus the right work on the turbo will see these engines go 600 HP (450 engine KW) yet have great traffic manners and fair fuel economy - no cam change required. Anyway - one opinion for you to consider.

Fuel pump - 400LPH will do it.

A friend swapped out his for some bigger crow cams on his FG XR6T and his top end was amazing. He had around the 330-350rwkw mark. Down low power loss wasn't noticeable as he was running E85.

IMHO on a big turbo (BA, BF, FG F6) don't bother. With the little turbo it's a great way to give an FG XR6T some legs when the baby turbo runs out of puff.

No sorry I forgot to mention, its an 05 BA xr6 turbo mk11 auto.

And that sounds consistent with what I'm thinking about with the cam, that it will only increase top end and not worth doing with such small power increases.

As for the rest I will not be doing exhaust or intercooler as its not needed with the power im after, I don't plan on running past 10psi. And only chasing around 300rwhp from this. which should be heaps enough for a weekend cruiser.

Hence why 60lb injectors with 400lph fuel pump, heavy duty valve springs, intake and tune should get me that sort of power easy.

And what does porting the waste gate do? Should I fit a BOV in place of it.

Porting the wastegate helps control exhaust bleed off and boost past about 15 psi - not needed in your build scenario - and you can use the stock injectors ( provided they are clean and in good shape) to get 270 - 280 KW at the engine ( over 300 hp at the tyres) so that will save you some cash as well.

Thanks guys. I will probably port the wastegate while im in there just in case now I know. Just out of curiosity what type of psi can these turbo's safely do.. 15psi from a stock turbo sounds like a lot of boost?

Also I know I can get 300fwkts from a simple tune but I want that bit extra work done so I can get that bit more power without having it working so hard to make that sort of power.

Been waiting for this topic to surface. Just fitted Atomic stage 4 cams to my FG. Ive had success in the past with camshaft upgrade in bossted applications so I thought..Hell ..why not. Idle is smooth, albeit abit all over the place due to the vacuum change. But they do sound raspier on a rev. Its getting tuned next week so well see. Unfortunately Ive added acouple of other upgrades at the same time so its going to be hard to say what made how much. Standard FG cams are an upgrade over BA/BF..and even then the FG cams are conservative due to emissions and the like.

I just wanted to try something abit different. True..its not a cheap option, but while the cams were out for the valve spring upgrade we threw them in. Tuning is an issue. A lot more time will be spent..again at a cost.

Stay tuned.. no pun intended lol
