It's a mish mash of rubbish parts so pat the old girl as she's held up beautifully. How much do you love it? If only a little, change springs and move it onto another owner who's up for a challenge.

If you love it a lot, rip all that sh*t off, start again and turn it into a good reliable streater.

If it is soft valve springs and you replace them the car should hold whatever boost it was tuned for. Be aware though that replacing them will open up something else to the stress of your current power (I.e. clutch, gearbox, bottom end etc).

What wingnut said.

It wouldn't have both an APS piggyback and a flash tune...or at least I'd hope not. If you can afford for it to all go bang then just keep going as you are, otherwise it'd be wise to take it to a reliable tuner to get it all looked at.

hmm,

So if I rip the APS out tomorrow, do I need to replace the unit with something else?

Can you define mish mash or rubbish parts? Are you just referring to the APS shi t ? I know Monza is not the best. If I throw out the APS module and end up changing the cooler in a few months then should be better? either way needs a good tune but would probably wait until I get more upgrades ready to fit.. may be a while

I do love it actually.. waited a while to find a mint condition XR6T with all options, manual leather sunroof etc all in superior condition with low kms for my budget at the time, so prefer to hang on to it for another year or two, had to drive up to Bendigo to pick up the car after having it tested by two different mechanics

Well first thing I'm doing is tuning it back to 10psi with the X3 tonight before it leaves the driveway... have to wait another 3months before can take to a tuner

So springs are a must then?

the BA's are known to have a weak gearbox so that'll probably be next on the cards inc. a new clutch and maybe flywheel personally I would look into a 6 speed manual since the 5 speeds are made from glass (im not sure if the tail shaft will need to be modified or replaced due to the dif. box) all this after the valve springs are done of course then I would seriously consider getting a custom tune but you might want to (dont have to) consider getting a better intercooler and a high flow cat.. maybe even swap out some of the restrictive pipes in the intake setup.

it'll cost you cheaper to sell the t5 box in good condition then let it blow before upgrading to the t56. plus if the clutch is stronger then the box it is gonna sh*t itself quicker. the slipping clutch is prob only thing keeping it going

So if I rip the APS out tomorrow...

If it is still connected then no I certainly wouldn't recommend you yank it out yourself. If it is the old piggyback computer then fck knows what's going on, it is probably still overriding some of the parameters that your flash tune is trying to change.

Don't be surprised if the valve springs are not dealing very well with above stock boost pressure.

My car is a MK2 FG, as soon as the boost went to 16psi, the valve springs started to fall over at 4600rpm.

That was with less than 30k kms on the clock.

So yeah, they're not the best.
