HELP!!

I bought a Momo gear knob for my manual BA today.

For the life of me, I can not get the standard gear knob off.

Surely it just screws off?

Is there a trick to it? I've used everything from a Tea Towel to get a better grip to multi grips and it won't budge.

It's quite dissapointing to spend $200 on a gear knob and not being able to use it.

The last thing I want to do is ask Ford to fit it!

Hehe reminds me of the first time the mech's did a Momo knob at work!

It simply screws off.

The boys usually wrap the existing gear knob in good rags and use some Vise grips. It is on extremely tight (as you have already found).

Sombody else might have a ingenious way of removing them............. :ermm:

I'm glad the momo ones use different methods of securing, cause the standard subaru one was just as f*cking hard to remove as I'll be the standard ford one is, when I examined the thread on the subie it had some dryed glue or something in the threads.. so it wouldn't suprise me if you gotta break the glue before they come off.

good luck, let me know how you go cause I'll be adding my momo spere to the t when I get it ;)

cheers,

Matt

Just heat the gear knob up to about 250C and it should come straight off. I find I can achieve this temp on my T by just leaving the damn thing parked in the sun!

I optioned up to the Momo knob which dealer fitted prior to taking delivery of my vehicle and found the OEM one in the glove box (not until I got home). Opened up the box it was in, the leather around it was all chewed up from whatever they used to get it off as well as scratch marks on the alloy. So if that's any indication how tight it was, you may end up with a similar result.

Good luck as I dont think there is any practical easier way.

Yeap, that's how mine ended up.

I finally got serious this afternoon and got it off.

The standard knob is glued on. Even though I wrapped it with an old pair of tracksuit pants before applying the vice grips. It still managed to tear the hell out of it.

I'll just have to sell the Momo knob with the car when I eventually sell it.

I can not believe the amount of effort it took to remove. If I hadn't asked here, I would have thought that there was a grub screw or something holding it on.

it's pretty cheeky those bastards at FoMoCo stuck the sucka on..

I would go the momo option, but I think that the big long chrome shaft on it just looks sh*t.

I prefer the knob straight to the gear boot.

You could have tried the ol hair dryer on the glue, it seems to work well on stickers

Has anyone tried a SAAS gearknob from autobarn? Would they fit?

my brother had the same trouble but on a different car

what I done was wrap the gear nob with a piece of old inner tube

next I used a strap type oil filter remover ,one that you can put a half inch ratchet or breaker bar in the end I used a 12 inch breaker bar and it came off fairly easy.the beauty of the rubber is it provides protection to the gear knob and also gives a bit of extra grip......good luck!
