iPad Mini Side Slide in Dash mount in BFII XR6.

I thought I would write up the design project details of installing an iPad Mini into the dash of a BA/BF XR6. I have not yet decided whether to go ahead or not with this project, and if so it will be later this year. But if anyone would like to attempt this I thought you would appreciate the following details…

What you will need…

Spare ICC Dash facia cover from eBay ~ $40.00

iPad Mini with Cellular 4G ~ $500-$800

iPad Mini ‘Side Slider’ Kit from Sound Man Car Audio ~ $150

30 pin to USB ~ $25

ADVANTAGES:

This setup allows Bluetooth music streaming and calling, with connection to two devices. So while streaming audio from the iPad Mini via Bluetooth, if you receive a phone call on your phone the music will stop. As well charging the iPad via USB into the head unit (if you have that capability, if not you need an iStreamer ~$250)

You can stream via Spotify, Rdio, iPod, Pandora etc via Bluetooth to the head unit.

You can also use TomTom or similar GPS apps to use the display as a GPS unit, I haven’t tested whether you can run the GPS app (on mute) while streaming music from the iPad.

Also use it for passengers to watch Movies, stream Youtube, video record/skype call, shazam songs on the radio and a few other uses I haven’t looked into yet.

DISADVANTAGES:

You lose the use of the stock screen which displays the AC settings, I am trying to figure out a way of having an ‘AC on’ indicator light in the AC button but haven’t looked into this just yet.

I don’t think this is a huge disadvantage at this stage, but also it is a costly way of getting Spotify and GPS in the dash. This is where I am weighing up the costs and will decide to go ahead with the project later this year.

My current setup

Alpine CDE-147EBT Head Unit ~$299

German Maestro EV6808 2-Way Front splits ~ $699

Rears coming soon…

I will try and find a local panel shop keen to do some fabricating/body work, have a chat to them about costs and update this thread when I have more details

Let me know what you think…

That's awesome, I've recently been thinking about putting one into my fg but not replacing the icc screen, I want mine as a swivel sort of thing maybe with a ram mount. Want to hook it up to my obd dongle since I don't really go to the effort of using my iphone for that as often as I'd like. So if I had a dedicated iPad mini for it it would be awesome. I'd go base model wifi no 3G and connect it to my phones 4g, might even wait till the new one comes out and makes the first gem cheaper.

Ideally I'd like mine to swivel out and my bratty secure and no move too much, ie take a corner and some arm swing around, but I'd also like to be able to swivel it away and conceal it when not in use. Haven't really found anything that I'm sure of yet, some of the ram mount accessories might be what I'm after but haven't researched it enough yet.

Good luck with the project, iPad mini is the perfect form factor for me for this sort of thing. Equally a cheap as sh*t android would work too but I've got too many apps I use on iOS lol.

Video doesnt excist...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7uZbQu662

Not knocking the idea but have you measured the fascia against the mini?

Will it fit the area you have chopped it into with the curved shaped of the dash....

Sorry here is the link...

Here is an image I took of an iPad mini 'stuck' to the dash... definitely room for it from what I can tell
