When I first put my cb in I didnt want an external aerial at all, so I simply stood an aerial up on the back seat between the split fold of the seat. I was able to get up to 5 km range between my car and my mates (a Late model camira with an identical setup). This is at least equivalent to a handheld.

Left it like that for a couple of months until I found the glass mount I have now.

I dont think you would have any problems at all mounting on the towbar, especially if your talking truck-sized uhf aerials. Should be fine for our use anyway.

Cro, just your thoughts or anyone who may shed some light on the subject..... I really dont want to drill holes in my baby, and also have a loan of a CB from work. I was wondering if you think I'd still get a decent reception if I mounted the antenna in place of the tow ball on the back or the car?

I can get the areial cable to the back of the car no troubles, just wanted to make sure I'd at least get some sort of reception from that low on the back of the car?

No holes need to be drilled mate.

As YCL said, if you have a non ground independant arial you will be fine as your car will act as a ground plane.

Again as YCL said you wont get much reception behind you, only infront.

You also do not need to drill holes in your baby to mount a CB and aerial.

If you get say a uh-013 with the detachable head unit you can use double sided tape to attach the head unit in or under your tissue box holder and you can put the main unit under your seat, or if you have a long enough 3pair console cable you can mount in yoru boot like I did.

Regarding the aerial, you can buy a bracket from dickies, $20 which will mount on your boot lip. Saleen1 and I got this setup. As long as you have a non ground independant aerial it will work very well giving you enough reception behind and even more ahead of you. This bracket just uses two clamps which clamp into the underside of your bootlip, and has rubber to protect your paintwork.

Canberra to Jindabyne is about 2 hours, maybe a tad more.

Your other option would be to turn off the Hume and head to Adelong, Tumut, Adaminaby then Cooma (Snowy Mtns Hwy) and meet us there.

It would be a bit quicker than heading all the way up to Yass and then the Barton Hwy to Canberra.

I think saleen1 is meeting us in Cooma too (Rob???), and eta in Cooma is around 5 - 5:30pm.

I have set up my GME TX 3200 in the car with a window mount glass antenna from Dickies. it works a treat so far, and I look forward to giving it a real workout this weekend. As far as the drive goes, I can't wait...

Cro, wanted to know.... I figured I'd break the piggy bank and spluge on a UHF split with the arial clamped to the boot as you suggested.

What I wanted to know was, did you clamp the arial to the boot it self or to the side of it? Also I figure I'll put the base unit in the spot where the sat nav would normally go. Is there power there already? Or di I still need to run a cable from the front of the car? I'm hoping the wiring loom for the ford sat nav is there anyway, saving me a lot of work.
