Ive been around these cars for nearly 7 years now and built some nearly completely. Im interested in one at the moment but have a few worries. Its an 06 BF model, but it has 180,000km on it. Is this a lot or seems to be around the mark for a 6 year old car? I know in general fords can go for hundreds of thousands of km but just a bit wary. I also havnt had anything to do with the ZF as of yet, and even though when they came out they were considered an excellent box cause stock they can handle high amounts of power compared to the 4 speed, there seems to be a lot of horror stories going around about the whole milkshake thing and such. Is this a high risk thing for a car of this many km, especially if it may not have had a gearbox service? The guy says its had every serviced, but a general service wouldnt do a ZF service id imagine as its the better part of $5-800 am I wrong? So if the ZF hasnt had a service, is 180000km a high risk for the heat exchanger to erode or do whatever it does to cause the milkshake? When I go and look at the car, is there much a can look at to see how it is? Obviously look at the water and make sure it hasnt milkshaked or close to? But you cant exactly pull piping off to check the play of the turbo and such lol is there anything to look for maybe driving it in tiptronic and finding gear lags going back down gears or up and such?Cheers for any feedback guys ive missed my T so much and looking forward to getting behind the wheel again, just dont want to finally pick one up and been had Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/84693-new-car/ Share on other sites

(car is stock).Just get rid of the heat exchanger and put a stand alone cooler (I did this at around 180,000kms, used a B&M cooler with braided lines and Earls fittings).Assuming its not presently in a milkshake condition)If the car is stock it should still be quite strong...obvsiously diff bushes need to be looked at...but turbo should be ok if oil was changed regularly... How much did the b&m zf cooler cost you? I heard should change to steel pan too? He says car has always had services would they had done zf service at 100k? (so you need to ask specifically if the tranny was serviced)Put the cooler on and changed the tranny oil at the same time, and fitted a steel pan.Like I said my BF was an ex highway patrol car so admitedly it's had a hard life, but I think these cars are quite reliable in stock standard form and can handle alot of punishment. The cooler I bought for around $130 from Rocket Industries here in Sydney, and the braided lines and fittings I bought from Earls in Silverwater...the fittings and a couple of meters of braided line cost me over $350 from memory(which was steep)...as I went with really good olive clamp style fittings which shouldn't leak...you could get cheaper fittings and lines, its up to you.Chances are that the car you're looking at is an ex highway patrol with that many kms on it. Azid Member 213 Member For: 13y 8m 19d Posted 23/04/13 10:00 AM Author Share Posted 23/04/13 10:00 AM Hey cheers mate made me feel better. I just spoke to guy he said it wasn't ex chaser befor I asked, he said he looked a long time for one that wasn't ex cop car. He said he doesn't think it's had gearbox service just all it's normal ones. It's got 180k on it so if it drives ok, I get it and do service, pan n cooler straight away gearbox should be ok? It's scary to think gearbox has had same oil for 180,000km? Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/84693-new-car/#findComment-1383201 Share on other sites
boost69 Donating Members 737 Member For: 20y 18d Posted 23/04/13 11:19 PM Share Posted 23/04/13 11:19 PM Like I said im no expert, and I am basing my opinion on my personal experience, but as long as the gearbox wasn't abused I don't think you will have a problem.Though for piece of mind you definately have to get rid of the stock standard heat exhchanger, as it is literally a walking time bomb.Like I said I dropped the oil at around 180,000kms and really had not issue with box, but was always concerend about the milk shake issue.Definatley get the stand alone cooler, can't stress that enough.
