I have been told on here factory exhausts are stainless. Can anyone confirm 100%? Do any car makers use mild steel for exhausts?

Stainless pipe work and mufflers and it is very likely to be 409 grade as it is cheap ( but effective - will go 10 years in most cases). Inside the mufflers I cannot say for sure as I have only sliced and diced a rear muffler and that looked to be stainless as well. Next step up is usually 304 grade which is okay to roll if you are fabricating your own mufflers and it is easily available, after that..... well, at the risk of debate, 316 can be used.

Mild steel was almost universal years ago but far less common now. If you remember the au1 falcons and VP 6 cylinder C'dores- rear mufflers just made it past the warranty period.
