Gents

I have recently taken my wheels to reputable mechanic to get some diagnostics done to see if

The engine has internal problems . The car was running like dog on idle to start with.

The mechanic has preformed comp test , ( results all cylinders @175 psi except for one at 90 psi)

I have been told its a craked piston or ring . The head was not taken off , to I get second opinion ,

The car has only 50k on the clock , not common for a fpv f6 ?

Anyway does anybody have any ideas , if ring or piston needs replacing

Can anybody recommend a reputable engine reconditioning mob in the north.

What cost should I except !

Thanks

You can also do a leak down test but not many have that tool although I think I got mine off ebay for $100+. There ar e cheap borescopes where you can see inside the bore. You wont be able to see a cracked ring or ring land but you will see something if you torched the piston thru massive detonation.

It could be a stuffed valve. WHen you do a compression test you do it without oil in the cylinder then you pour some oil in there to determine if piston or valves.

I would get a second opinion before undertaking such massive surgery.

But if the compression is down in that cylinder it is really pretty much an engine out job. You just need to be sure he used the tester properly and that it wasnt a false reading.

Suggets you talk to your tuner re engine rebuild.

No 5 injector adaptor was covered in oil and possibly may have been shorting, but oil appears to be from rocker cover breather so may be a result of excessive blow by, but have in the past seen ring issues from cylinders miss firing

Compression is down in no 2 slightly and very low in No5, comps were checked 3 times, leakdown test was carried out and will not hold pressure in no5 and is going into crankcase, We have had success with ring issues in the past without dismantlng the engine, but the car was given back to owner before complete diagnosis was carried out and while trying a possible fix as owner needed his car back.

Camshafts also have some strange wear but not the cause of the running issues, but could be a future issue

If Mick is your mechanic, do your home work and when you have wasted your time go back to him and listen to what he has to say, he is a straight shooter and will spend the time to explain and fix your problems.

we are not his regular mechanic, did a service for him a while back and was just trouble shooting as he has replaced his plugs and could not get to the bottom of the issues, he lives the other side of the city so considers us to far to travel for tuning, servicing etc, it is always good to have someone local to you in cases like this.

In one of your prior posts you mentioned that after a thrash it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders.

Did you get the valve springs done.

Then you took it to the race track and that's when the problems arose.

I wonder if the lifters got pumped up so much that they hit the piston. Never heard of it with a Barra but possible.

I would definately stick a bore scope in there before pulling your donk out. I'd still want to see the top of the piston doing anything. Nowadays you can get scopes that connect to your laptop for cheap. Due to the spark plug placement there is no way to see the valves I think.

our snap on bore scope has a mirror so you can look at the valves, well as best as you can but not clear, but the leak down test showed it leaking into the crankcase

Everything he says is going to be spot on you know that. ^^^^^

Suddenly the hour drive could have saved $5k.

Atomicg6 cracked a ring with 20000kms on the car, tuned by hpf to 360.

Could also be ring lands, I have tried this some time ago, no compression and leaking into crankcase. Oil smells burnt really quickly, as combustion leaks into crankcase, and actually burns the oil. You can smell this after only a few 100 k's.

it does surprise me that people think an hour drive is far to have the job done right first time.

I drove 1.5hrs each way to get 'real' wheel alignment. Ends up being cheaper and more convenient in the long run.
