My MP3 CD has 122 songs and is a tad over 1/2 full. That's enough music to listen to on a Sydney - Melbourne run. At that rate, a full CD should hold around 240 songs. Enough for the return trip.

The CD is unlikelty to get scratched as there is little need to remove it from the radio. After 240 songs, I don't mind it starting again from song 1.

If it's scratched, it costs $1 to burn another. If I grow tired of those 240 songs, it costs me another $1 to burn a second CD with another 240 songs. Who gives a rats if a CD is knocked off out of the radio? It costs another $1 to burn a new one. How much for a new IPOD?

In Sydney, ABD Radio (2BL) is caning many of the FM stations. I am not surprised. With MP3 technology, we don't have to listen to wall-to-wall adverts (with a few songs thrown in to break up the monotony).

I guess the Ipod is popular because of it's versatility, I use mine (classic 120G) in car, mowing, jogging, at home, on the plane for music and Vid and for data storage for work plus more. It really depends what your usage is going to be, like cars, no point in buying a T if your going to putter around a 20Kph!

try setting your mp3 cd to only play certain songs according to your mood, or quickly flick to another artist without fumbling through folders, or update your cd in less than a minute when you download new songs, or take your cd out of the car and listen to it wherever you want....

Oops! sent too quickly. REMEMBER The biggest killer to iPods and MP3's is heat. Don't leave your iPods in the car on hot days or be prepared for them to fail. MP3 disks also suffer from the heat, but they are a few cents! That's why I use MP3 for daily stuff because it's more convenient, and iPods for longer trips.

ive used wma/mp3 cds in my previous car but on the BF and earlier models with no mp3 cd support ipod seems to be the way to go. Don't forget there are other mp3 players cheaper than the ipod that will do just as good of a job (but less marketed/fashionable) as the ipod if you want something to leave in the car.

My girlfriend wants to upgrade hers at some point so ill probably just inherit that.

Edit: Just a note on the original post, windows media player will rip cds to mp3 or wma without any 3rd party software.

Yeah but if you use another MP3 player you loose the full integration with the FG that the Ipod gives you. They still have an aux audio jack input but it's not as cool!

my point was more directed at ba/bf where I believe its just an aux line anyway? (Unless there is integrated ipod control which would be awesome but I havent heard of it). My gf has a pioneer unit with full ipod integration and control from the head unit which is great and makes staying with the ipod a good idea but if its just using an aux line any mp3 device should do.
