I have the 80gb classic and have tried the 160gb classic and that worked great as well. You don't have to have a song playing. Just plug and play. I did have an issue with mine after the 1st week....it unplugged itself behind the dash and mine stopped working. It would charge the ipod but not play any songs. If I took the ipod off pause then plugged it in it would play for a split second then nothing.
