The headphone output is being amplified by a very small, average quality headphone amp and you'll suffer really badly if you then connect this into a line-level input (home amp or car amp) and re-amplify it again.Definitely, definitely use the line out, which is only accessible via the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod. If you use an iPod dock, that will give you a 3.5mm jack, or I use a PocketDock adapter, which gives u a standard firewire port and a 3.5mm line-out in a plug that's the size of half your thumb length. The iPod's Burr-Brown DAC has it's analog output spat directly out the line-out on the dock connector, bypassing all other analog circuitry, and the signal to noise ratio+total harmonic distortion is the best in the hard-drive based music player market and will also rival most home CD player signals. The headphone output? sh*te. But it's only for sh*tey headphones remember

Is the volume even lower than through the headphone socket?

The car kit was using the blue power plug already but when I moved it to the piggy back plug on the amplifier with everything connected then the stereo unit just displays 'media' (which is what the carkit uses) and you can't turn it off or do anything with it either. Even the Cell phone doesn't work. Taking the keys out of the ignition does nothing, you can't turn it off. Take the CarKit out of the piggy back power supply plug and all returns to normal again.Anyone have both working - anything that can be done to make both work? ZAP No boost, no bottle, just my foot on the throttle! I have fitted several carkits (including Nokia CK1W) to the Ford and it is no problem with the carkit only the wiring. The AUX plug has:Perm PowerAcc PowerEarthRadio MuteIf the Media is on permemantly on the ICC then the mute wire is not connected right. Check the wiring.

Is there a possibility that the 'piggy back' plug is incorrect?

I would say the plug is wrong.
