I agree with you spinning. I have always dropped the oil on my new cars at 1000klms and every 5000klms after that. The way I see it, oil is cheap, engines are not! I also like the peace of mind knowing I always keep the oil fresh. To some this may seem overkill but that's what I've always done and I've never had any of my vehicles let me down.

And yeh, I would like to know what the 'special' run in oil is supposed to be or in the case of the s/c 5.0 is it ok just to go with the recommended 5w-20 Castrol edge from 1000ks on? I'm almost at 1000ks so if anyone can shed a bit more light on the subject, it would be appreciated :)

Sz territory 2.7 diesels have run in oil with red dye in it to detect oil leaks early on in the engines life, 5.4 and 5.0 have a special mineral oil only available to the factory (they wont release specs) 4.0 turbo have 15w40 mineral oil filled from factory, xr6 turbos dont have special run in oil as such, just mineral oil.

OK, just checked through the owners manual and there is no mention of any special run in oil, only the recommended 5W-20 Castrol Edge so I would assume all is ok to just do a oil and filter change using said oil at 1000ks then every 5000ks after that?

I can guarantee you that the oil that comes in the Miami from the factory is 5w-20. I changed mine at 3000k's and can show you evidence of the contamination found and the reduction of this at the following oil change at 8000ks. I have no doubt in my mind there is benefit in changing the oil earlier.

Cheers Benny, much appreciated mate. I will drop the oil next week and do the filter.....I couldnt see any harm at all changing it at 1000ks with the 5W-20 Castrol edge but just wanted to see if anyone had a valid opinion on the subject. Thanks again mate :)

my 5.4 FG had engine issues earlier on, the dealer advise me to change the oil to the synthetic prematurely, when it went higher at ford they insisted that it went back to the run in mineral oil before they would consider anything, the car had about 5 changes in the first 10,000 klms

this is interesting. I was planning to do inbetween services myself on my GT every 5000 as I do on my xr6t. will it void warranty if the oil and filter is changed by myslef at home? could they even tell it has been changed?? as long as I stick with the specs I wouldnt think they would even notice
