Never want to do that again its a pain in the ass. Next time I'll buy the pump already in the sender and save myself a headache. Anyway, the pump filter and tank was filthy with a black jelly substance and bits of black grit throughout the tank. I used a clean white rag to mop the bottom of the tank while it was open to get as much out as I could.

Sounds like a worthwhile exercise to clean the tank though even if it was a pain to do.

Previous owner could have been a tight ass.

It's got everything to do with where you buy the fuel from.

But thanks for the info OP and Adam

We complained to the authorities and they investigated the servo we bought from. They got in huge trouble their tanks were filthy.

My suggestion to others would be to just buy the cradle with the Walbro pump in it. The extra cost would be justified by the time saved. I found it very fiddly the way I did it.
