Gday guys, new to the forum. Im looking at purchasing a xr6 or xr6 turbo ute. Have a few cars in mind, budget ranges from $8,000 - $11,000. BA seems to fit that budget resonably well, and was after some advice on common problems, things to look for, things to avoid, common faults etc. Car wont be getting many mods, and will be used for daily transport, and small amounts of towing. (Motos and 6x4 box trailer). Dont know huge amounts about the BA apart from gearbox and diff bush issues. I have found 3 utes that seem resonable, all 3 are autos and have from 100,000-120,000km on the clock. What sort of km per tank should I expect from inner suburban driving, (being sensible)

Any help muchly appreciated, cheers Goutman.

Make sure it is stock, and not been returned to stock. With a good service record. Listen to turbo on shut down for any noises. If you hear what sounds like marbles in a can, don't bother with it. I would rather a car that's been well serviced with 150,000kms than a 100,000 km car that hasn't been serviced regularly. Good Luck, these cars can be a bit hit or miss, as they are often flogged to within an inch of thier life. They are also often played with by those that don't know their limitations, or requirements.

Cheers

You can hear the turbo roll down on all the cars.

Or they're modified, or have been modified by people who know what they're doing and have been looked after incredibly well with twice as many oil changes as the stockers out there.

I'd say around 450-500km from a tank in a ute.

Don't worry about the diff bushes as that's a sedan problem. The utes have a different setup in the rear.

Adam is very correct. Unfortunately though, these vehicles are the exception not the rule. And generally will not be able to be bought at your price range.

I own a 03 xr6t and live in sydney, driving to and from work mon - fri, and get about 450kms per tank. I only spend $60 - $75 on BPU every week depending on price per litre, and it never falls below less than 1/4 tank.

Hope this helps.

In the handbook, Ford advise to use an auto for towing instead of the manual.

I would look around for a decent BF XR6(non turbo). Mate sold a BF ute with leather, 75,000ks, very tidy, for around the $8,000 mark.

Thanks for the advise on the manual, prefer the auto any how. What is the weak point about the manual? $8,000 for a BF ute with leather, if I could find something that cheap, I'd buy it!

as others said check service history, check brakes, tyres and turbo, all those little things will end up costing you money down the track if they havent been looked after...
