Hi everyone,

I have a 2010 fg xr6t manual and I get this chattering noise at idle that disappears when I push the clutch in. It is intermittent and of course it will never do it at the dealership but I showed them this video and they said it was perfectly normal. I find it a bit hard to believe so I'm after some alternate opinions.

Thanks

I had the same thing, I filled my box with 4.5ltr of tranzmax Z [last years formula not the currant mix as I have been told you cant use the latest oil in the 6 speed man] that shut it up when the car is at op temp.

Some guys recommend 5ltr but this made my box rather notchy so I droped about half a litre and that fixed it.

Mainlube recommends there gear box oil, it is slightly thicker and they say it will shut your box up but some guys have experianced notchy boxes with this stuff.

Penrite has some oil worth looking at.

Just a thought, has anyone tried Synforce cruiser gear oil 80 in their manual? I used to run this in my landcruiser which suffered from crunching and rollover noise even after a full rebuild. It shut it up and shifts were spot on. It may be considered "too heavy" for the falcon box, but couls be worth a shot

Have you spoken to ford about yours #96?

Not yet. Was under the car clearing rubber out (oh the joys of quarter miles) and spotted oil on the diff. So will be up there soon.

Will try and remember to post up what they say about the chatter.

Also seem to have a lot of driveline lash, ans find myself riding the clutch a little on shifts to soften it all up.

I just bought tranzmax z for my t56, is this now Not the oil I should be using? What's wrong with the new formula?

Use the Mainlube oil Spiro, it is very highly regarded by T56 owners.

Can that be done with a BA T5 box too?

If your T5 is a little tired, it might also want some bearings at the same time.

Yep, my FG manual sounds like Jimi Hendrix at idle. OED666, what exactly does preload mean and with insufficient preload, what is actually happening in there?

To eliminate any end-float in the cluster, input and mainshaft, "pre-load" is put on the bearings. This is adjusted by shimming under the bearings until they are correct. The transmission is stripped bare and re-assembled in pieces with the shimming done on the main components.

Is this something that ford should cover under warranty?

Very grey area!

Castrol changed the dye (and that's all they claim to have changed) in Transmax Z, from green to a light brown. Ever since this change, we have had shift quality issues with TR-6060's, as they have brass synchros. The earlier T56 has carbon synchros, and the newer transmaz is fine.

What did Ford say about the chatter?
