most truckies know how to drive though, its the women going to work that cant merge for sh*t that causes the traffic 80% of the time! that's in sydney anyway, where both the m4 and m5 go from 4-2 and 3-2 lanes.

So when I'm driving to work, merging onto the ring road in the added lane, and a truck that's come from the west gate decides it wants to be in the left lane (crossing a half merged lane between the left and middle lanes, and an unbroken line in the process), without using indicators, to be right where my car is....that's MY fault?

In the US - I never really felt the traffic was gridlock in LA like I've experienced on the SE Freeway in Melbourne. It kept moving in LA but it was slow. I think it's because the 65mph limit appears to me to be notional - most of the folks in LA will speed up to 70-75mph when they get the chance on the freeway which appears to help congestion zones clear up faster. Also I noticed that even though many people speed in LA - they are courteous and let you merge in. Guess they know what it means to their commute time if there is a bingle :omg:

On my commute biggest drama is people day dreaming in the right lane. A few flashes of the high beams fixes that though. The biggest problem on the eastern is some people just won't go over 80. No cars for kms in front, and cars backed up for kms.

Driver training won't fix stupid.

They've tried a few things with the brisbane urban corridor or whatever it's called, which is basically the route between the west and the port of brisbane which seem to work a treat.

In a nutshell all heavy vehicles must keep left (unless turning right), and all through traffic must use the logan and gateway motorways. Is policed automatically via number plate recognition based on if a heavy vehicle is observed getting between points A & C without going via B then they get a nice little fine in the mail.

As others have mentioned, the main reason it's an issue is morons not knowing how to behave or getting scared by the presence of a large vehicle.

But unless they ban buses at the same time then it will have next to no effect as by my observations they ironically correlate with the most problems.

whenever I've been on qld freeways they're the best for keeping left imo...

S.A. roads are shocking for people doing under the limit sitting in the right lane... and apparently police are now starting to crack down on people overtaking in left hand lanes... well if people.won't keep left what can ya do?

tracks are a big issue here but I don't think would be such an issue if they all kept left swell... maybe a left lane for trucks and slow moving vehicles... but then Mr citizen doing 60 in an 100 isn't gonna wanna sit in the same lane as all the semis

how about the traffic lights stay green a little longer in the direction that bulk of the traffic is flowing?

like for eg, sitting in traffic and the intersection your at is green, but the one 100m in front of you is red?

traffic signals could be smarter no? they just seem dumb and programmed atm.

There are options.. One program I've seen installed quite successfully is called streams.. It manages phasing of signals so traffic flow on the major road is continuous.. Works a treat and only operates in peak hours..

Typically traffic signals phases are designed based on peak hour flows.. However once you start analysing upstream and downstream effects you get into a very specialised area of engineering. This falls into the 'too expensive' basket..

A lot of places won't install streams because of the hardware involved. Each streams intersection requires two 3G modems and a variable personality ROM.. These get stolen a lot.. Also it's not bullet proof because the intention is an average accelerating car will be able to run smoothly through the intersections.. Then you get some fella in a done up XR6T who blasts off the lights then has to stop because he's reached the next one quicker then calculated.. Then as he attempts to take off when it goes green.. He's actually blocking free flowing traffic..

So maybe we should eliminate congestion by banning high powered cars? :-P
