I was talking with a couple of Indian work mates this week and the topic of traffic congestion came up and how long it takes to get to work.

They pointed out that in some cities in India trucks are banned during peak hour, so from 6am till 9am and 4pm till 7pm there are no trucks allowed on the main roads. I didnt think to ask if it was a truck of a certain weight but still thought it was a good idea in many ways and yet so simple.

Of course it would have its down sides, for the truckies of course, but I reckon there are ways of sorting this out and it would free up traffic no end...

...and then of course there's the other topic of lane splitting being legalized in Vic going through the motions atm, I'm definitely in favor of this and find myself wanting a bike more and more each time I see another barstard on a bike slip past me as I'm stuck waiting...

got me thinking the other day how much quieter the roads are when we have the industrial day off!

trucks and trades make up most of the traffic I recon.

trucks dominate the freeways and hwys.

most truckies know how to drive though, its the women going to work that cant merge for sh*t that causes the traffic 80% of the time! that's in sydney anyway, where both the m4 and m5 go from 4-2 and 3-2 lanes.

What Fordom said.

I drive a truck to work, and am only ever held up by car.

I just got back from Melbourne. Was coaching a Volleyball team in a big schools tournament. I was staying near Footscray and driving a bus either to the aquatics centre (MSAC) or the Southern Volleyball Centre in Dandenong. The traffic was $h!t to say the least. Even big delays on the toll ways. We may have a dumb arse one way expressway here in Adelaide but I'd much rather it! Some really bad bottle necks in Adelaide that would benefit from the above idea though!

You give the industrial sector 9-3 to work?

Light trucks aren't a problem (so you're okay Henz).. Using my local example.. The highway runs right through town and its literally the main blood supply everyone uses and filters off to the smaller veins.

The problem? It's an approved A Triple route. Shorter then a B triple, using the A coupling to apparently make it more manoeuvrable.. Still a ridiculous sized vehicle to be operating in peak hour when people are weaving and vying for position at the next set of lights.

One step to tackling congestion that I've seen work effectively is eliminating right turns (where rights turn lanes don't exist). These are controlled by 'no right turn' signs with time periods (7-9am,3-6pm)..

However this method doesn't really work on motorways or freeways..

But as far as knocking out trucks.. Probably wouldn't work unless it was focused on articulated vehicles.. Even then it wouldn't fix the issue.. One articulated vehicle is about 3.5 car lengths.. Not enough of a gain to make much of a difference.

Trucks may not be the direct cause of congestion, but they are certainly indirectly causing it. Some people sh*t themselves when there's a truck nearby and don't speed up and go around it, also once traffic is ruined and slowed down by some "merge point" by a pack of morons who have no idea how to merge, then the trucks take forever to get going again, especially if the trucks have to go even slightly uphill.

Granted, this would be fine if the trucks stuck to the left-most lanes, but they don't, it's not unusual to see trucks four-wide doing 40km/h on a 100km/h freeway.
