Fuel Economy

I did some fuel economy testing on my outback trip, 4 days and 3000km and 40deg days. I came up with a couple conclusions.

Air con adds 1L per 100km.

Optimax or ULP made no measurable difference to fuel consumption during normal highway driving.

What are your experiences?

agree completely about those points. Another good way to save is to find a drafting partner, a car that is travelling at the speed you want and looks as thought they are switched on enough not to hit debris on the road. Breaking that wall of air even slightly helps economy. Down side, stone chip. Noth worth it to me but I know paople who swear by it

Esky> What sort of fuel economy did you achieve?

I've got that info at home.

But rough figures is the whole trip average was 11.? Max figure was 12.? And the best was 7.1 from Katoomba to Sydney

Ooo yeah - don't you love those downhill runs??? LOL

I would have expected better than elevens though for the country you were in.

I agree with the air con, but I have definitely had economy gains using optimax - but that's in my T3 not the ZL turbo which runs mostly on LPG.

BTW just for interest sake my T3 has just clocked over 30,000km and the overall average is 12.5l/100km (or 8km/litre) or 22.5 mpg. It is mostly country and outer suburban driving but has also quite a few trips into Sydney city and right across the city, east to west, north to south.

I was told that a car uses more fuel idling than driving (conservatively), does anyone know if this is true? In the 1500 odd km I've done in my XR6T the average economy is 13.4l/100km. Probably 60 -70 % highway driving. Always on PULP, mostly with A/C on.

I have noticed on my XR6T SSS with the trip computer set to instant, that it uses less fuel coasing downhill in 3 rather than 4.

Anybody else find that?

Also if you reset the trip comp each tank the L/100 indicated is always over a litre more than what it actually is, ie fuel added divided by ks driven.

Anybody else find that?

Yep, we are averaging around 12.8l/100 according to the computer but from measuring usage over a couple of tanks found that the computer overstates usage by about 0.4, so we are getting around 12.4l/100. Bloody good for the performance available and weight of the car. :)

Heres a theory..

what if the transmission has a Lock Up Torque Converter in 4th but not in 3rd

Then perhaps the coasting revs in 4th would higher because there is no slippage, but in 3rd there would be slippage so the revs could be lower?

So what's your tacho doing in 3rd Vs 4th?

BTW - what I "know" about auto transmissions could be printed in bold on a postage stamp with plenty of room for a portrait of the queen...
