Hi all,

The other day I drove out the driveway and took off as normal, didn't even hit boost then I heard a slight grinding noise up front and instantly the car stalled (auto by the way) then I stuck it in neutral and tried starting again but the motor wouldn't crank over, only the ticking noise from the ignition could be heard. Pushed it back into the driveway and called a tow-truck to take back to Herrod's.

I took the oil filler cap off and could see there was no oil in there and the cam had a slight burr on it. Thinking maybe I've blown the oil pump?? Can this lead to serious damage of the motor???

Anyone else had this happen in their FG XR6T?? Should I be looking for a new motor yet?? Previously running 360rwkw prior to the other day's events. Also whist the engine needs to be pulled apart what internal mods should I do so that this won't happen again??

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Cheers

The rocker cover wont show any oil in it - if you see oil in the rocker cover it is overful. You need to do a little more diagnostic work than just remove the oil filler cap.

Did you check the dipstick to confirm oil level?

If the engine has run out of oil, youre up for big bucks. Full engine rebuild.

How long since the last oil change?

How many kays on it?

Need a lot more info. Could be oil pump gears....

Hi yes, I checked the dipstick and the oil was at normal levels, just ticked over 100,000kms and Herrod's did a full service and tune about 15,000kms ago. I was thinking the grinding noise I heard was the oil pump gears also, but even if this were the case do you think the engine would crank over when trying to start or seize up??

I mean when a car starts up from cold, the engine cranks over and then the oil pressure build's up and away you go. At the moment the engine wont even crank over as if it were seized

thanks for the reply also

Going by what you have told me......

Sounds like oil pump gears have failed, starved your engine of oil, and the engine has seized.

Oh dear.....

Generally speaking what is the usual diagnosis or knock on effects when an oil pump sh*ts itself? Pistons, rings, rods etc.....

There isn't much talk/info about oil pumps failing on the forums.

Thanks again

100,000 Kms? How many of those were you running 360? I would assume it would be time for a rebuild anyway as these turbos aren't great after that amount of Kms according to what a lot of people suggest.

As for running out of oil, these things are very resilient at times. I services mine the other day and as I pulled off the sump I didn't have a single drop come out. Covered better in a previous post but not it has good oil it's purring. I would think if your engine wasn't getting enough oil you would have had an oil pressure warning light come up. Mine was going crazy and that's how I got into the issue.

The last 15,000km or so at 360rwkw but prior to that 270rwkw for approx 40,000km, Time for a re-build ?? has everyone else had to rebuild their engines at about 100k??

I don't think the car had time to bring up an oil warning light as it shut down so fast.

Maybe it's something more serious like a bent rod?? any suggestions guys??

Hopefully Herrod's get a chance to open it up and find out the problem tomorrow

To be honest mate you won't know until you get it looked at by the shop. Try and enjoy your Sunday night and look forward to the fun albeit expensive next stage of your build.

So the timing jumped out by 4 notches and threw a pulley out. unsure why it has done this. currently taking the head off to check the valves etc.aren't bent or broken as there is no compression

I Had a ba wagon do this last friday, timing jumped 4 teeth on exhaust cam and 6 or 7 on intake. All intake Valves hit piston and one smashed a rocker. Timing tensioner had an obvious dark spot where it normally sat then a clean spot where it jumped out, either the chain was worn and was slack on one side after sitting for 2 days or the tensioner had a spaz. Guides are all fine
