Hey guys, 1st post here...

I currently own a 2002 Nissan Patrol ZD30 which has currently givin me a lot of trouble which has got me thinking about future auto choices.

I am currently on my P Plates (Green) and I think I'm either off them in 6 months. or 1y and 6m... can't remember how long it's for.

Now I know what you're all thinking, ...this is just another young hot headded hoon wanting to drive a fast car. This is by no means the case and I'm certainly not a hoon.

I've owned a HiLux dualcab for 1 year 3.0 straight diesel (slowest car on earth but was good for what I wanted at the time...) and currently the Patrol 3.0TD (currently giving me grief). Honestly you'd be faster walking to you destination that the speed that those cars will get you there.. but they've served a good purpose.

- Now, Here's my Dilema;

I currently work for a domestic construction company (for my old man, I'm 2nd going on 3rd yr apprentice), and I'm required to regulary tow a trailer that can weigh close to 1.9 - 2 ton.

On weekends I try as often as I can to get out on the trail bike

I live in the suburbs just out of the city (Melbourne), and I can't park in carparks that are underground (real pain in the ass!)

..... You can see where this is going...

A Ford XR6t Ute is perfect. I can tow up to 2,300kg with the turbo, and only 1.2t with the N/A

On top of that, I can park in carparks, don't have to tow a trailer when transporting my bike and I'll have enough room to take the redicoulus amount of tools I need with me to work. I only am ever really driving by myself or with the girlfriend and with out me towing the work trailer to the tip and back, and almost out of a job.

I hope that you can see the other side to this stoy and I'm really not just out there to rip some skids.

Is there an exemption in any way that can allow me to drive this car, (even if it's just the working week days)?

Thanks for your help,

James

Yep I have two mates (brothers) that got exemptions in Melbourne because they work at the fruit market for their father they both have SS ute's with P's clearly displayed and ones only been bothered once. One has switched to a VZ GTO and is still under the exemption somehow so I'd say you can do it with the car in your dads name. The process is a bit tricky now I think you have to go to the magistrate to get it now but then that's it.

if the utes in your dads name and on the books as a work car then yea you can get an exemption to drive it during work hours ect because its legally your work vehicle

I know a bloke who works for himself and has an exemption to drive a ve ss, so it's all do able. A 10 minute call to vic roads will answer all your questions too.

You can do it mate.. I thought about it but if your not really that worried about getting a fast car and that's the reasons (above) you want it. Get a 2wd ranger. Low, turbo diesel with plenty of grunt, not slow anymore. Will be heaps cheaper. I had one before my xr6.

Thanks for the replies guys, ill give Vic roads a call to clear the grey areas up...

Also I'll look around at other cars, but to be honest the whole turbo diesel thing is starting to bother me.

A really helpful forum guys, thanks for the advice!

Pretty sure the trick with exemptions is that its the only vehicle you have available to drive. So if you can put it in your dad's name under the business and make it look like its the only vehicle you have to drive for work then you should be right. But be careful if going for an exemption based on work then using it on the weekends, you can get hit with some pretty decent fines
