I recently bourt a fg xr6 turbo, it was purchased from a dealer all very smooth, racv check etc.

anyway the car is stock standard. so I went out today and bourt a K&N filter for it just for sake of a bit more noise. I went to a mates place cause I didnt have the hex bit, opened it up

It has a K&N filter, its serviced as per log books at ford, but the K&N filter looked as if it had done 50,000kms it was completely nakrd. bugs sitting in it couldnt see the light of day through it.

So I put the new one in planning on cleaning the old one and selling it, once I buy the cleaning kit.

My question is.

When a car is serviced shouldn't they be cleaning the filter since it doesn't require a new air filter.

atleast clean it???

Normally when used cars get a car in with an aftermarket filter they replace it with a factory one, well that's our used car dept anyway, most dealers dont have the cleaning solution for them so wont touch them, not supposed to use compressed air so what can they do really

Place I went to 2 weeks ago cleaned the K&N filter based on my inspection. I was looking over the service job sheet / invoice and it said K&N cleaning fluids and I go hmmmm but was mildly surprised when I went to clean it on Sunday arvo in prep for the coming Snowy Cruise - opened up the airbox and it was clean - no bugs and other gunk on the underside facing the outside world :omg: Need a clean air filter from my experience going on previous Snowy Cruises cos am usually sittin behind a bunch of cars and need to extract what oxygen I can get for the car

to properly clean a k&n you need the kit... it has like a decided greaser and an oil. (as you obviously have worked out)

ye they can Spray the bugs out or whatever with compressed air but after you change a standard part it is no longer Ford's problem... you'd be pissed if they cleaned it the wrong way and fukd it...

I wasn't aware ford carried the k&n cleaning stuff.. but even if they do they would probably charge you as it takes longer and requires equipment. as opposed to a spray with a air gun

did you not read above comments????

can't be cleaned by normal methods and needs specific equipment !

so generic car yards should buy the kits to clean them and then do it for free????

coz u know.. why not ... they're not trying to make money... and why not send all the mechanics to a class of how toclean them properly so that they don't end up I <3 Bananas em up ...

I know!!! why don't we just send all ford mechs down to nizpro and have em train down there incase someone has a plenum or fuel system upgrade or other performance mods which aren't part of the job... but just incase...

but hey... if you need a little note on the bottom of your service report to say "didn't clan air filter" and that will make it all better... hey all for it
