Hey guys, I was unsure where to put this but I recently bought a 2003 BA xr6 turbo with 357rwhp, I have owned it for about 2 days, My gear box blew last night for some stupid reason? at least I think its my gear box, when I put it in drive it doesnt move anywhere but when in park I cant push it, also if I keep my foot on the revs ther idle will go up then go down again even though my foot hasnt moved?. I read some stuff about anything over 300hp in stock gear box is not good but I wasnt sure? what shall I do? what is a common error or just someone elses opinion would be good

I was under the impression the 4 speeds were good for around 300rwkw at least (stand to be corrected by someone who has owned one). does your trans have an aftermarket cooling system? if you've been giving it a hard time then it could be any number of things in your driveline. I'm going to assume there isn't any oil coming out anywhere? If I were in your position I would get it towed to my normal repairer and let them figure it out. with any luck it's something simple

thanks for the advice, there is no leaking or anything like that, it does have aftermarket cooling but I didn't thrash it if that's what u mean, I took of from triptronic 1st gear n it went click. after I turned the car off it wouldn't go anywhere.

Yeah it's sounds like the good old four speed let go unusual at that kind of power but it must of been on it's way out.

My one let go but that was at 347rwkw giving it a hard time and the I put the C4 with 3G stall much better.

If u intend to keep this car bite the bullet and build a good box assuming you intend to increase the power.

All by one from the wreckers for 800 and throw it in.

Good luck either way.

yeh I intend on keeping the car, so ill defo bite the bullet n get a decent build. what is recommended for wanting over 450hp?

I was also thinking maybe a manual transfer? if its a lil extra money would this be worth doing?

If you like the manual box the you can buy a whole kit from a wrecker for about 1500 - 2000 Inc cluch but you may want to purchase a twin plate clutch around 1500 + for reliability for that kind of power or stick to the auto and get a C4 built to handle your power with a good stall and you will never look back around 6 - 9k for that excise depending on what you do.

Did the previous owner mention who did the tuning or which mechanic he uses as I would be taking it to someone with experience first before deciding on rebuilds etc.

If you cannot afford to take it to someone then do LOTS of research first, read the obd2 port with a scanner or your flash tuner (if he gave it to you?). Check trans oil level....Basically the usual fault finding!

Good luck with it though

Usually a faulty convertor doesn't do that sounds like the box to me if u put it in any gear and won't move sounds like the box.

Convertor usually have a shattering felling and jerking when faulty.

But best check with your service guy.
