So, over the last couple of months my PW surge tank and what I believe to be a Bosch 044 that they use had started to make a lot of noise. Now I know they are quite loud as it is and mine is particularly loud as it has been mounted in the engine bay, but the noise it was making was almost unbearable for a rather sedate daily driven car. For the last couple of days it not only had the usual whine/buzzing noise but almost like a rattling of metal. So on the way home tonight the noise stopped...Not a whisper.... The car hasnt made this little noise for the last 3 years or since I got it modded basically brand new.

Now I assume after limping home the fuel pump has shat itself. When I tried to accelerate the car would just cough and splutter so I am guessing its running off what ever was left in the surge. Do they remove/disconnect the original fuel pump when installing the PW kit? Or is that what is trying to power my car?

So if we assume that the fuel pumped is cactus, how hard are they to install? Should I give it a crack myself (I am pretty handy and have a fair bit of experience with cars) or for the sake of a few hundred bucks should I hand it to a shop? Also, is it worth having it re-installed in the rear of the car as I have seen with most UTES.

Any advice would be great guys. This car has run perfectly apart from a few niggling things that I put off getting fixed and I would love to have her back on the road ASAP!

Thanks!

Standard pump stays in the fuel tank and feeds the surge tank fuel and the 044 feeds the engine. Check fuses for both the surge tank pump and the intank pump first then if they aren't blown grab a piece of garden hose and start your car and stick one end as close to the 044 as possible (your ear to the other end, lol) to see if you can hear it running, do the same for the intank pump if it is and climb under the rear!

The 044 will be easy to replace, the intank not so much as removal of either the liner or drop the diff can be painful...

Rubber mounting insulators around the brackets minimise noise. Dont get a ebay pump as most are fake, get one from a reputable shop

Make sure the pump says MADE IN CZECH REP not Germany - the fakes are "MADE IN GERMANY"

Anyone able to suggest a place that stocks these more often than not? Finding it really hard to get my hands on tbh.

Also any tips from people who have installed them. Maybe a step by step? Sorry for all the questions just can't afford to f*ck this up

So you are running 300 and a bit (according to your sig) and you are running a 044. Geez mate, a whining wife is bad enough but have a whining pump when you dont need it is a bit like being a sucker for punishment.

044s are crap mate, I have used them for 20 years when $550 was a good price for one. I thought it was a faulty pump when new. Its just a POS. I do use one intank though and its OK there. But not externally. Use something else, forget the 044.
