XRPhantom Member 173 Member For: 21y 5m 20d Location: NSW Posted 31/12/03 12:50 AM Share Posted 31/12/03 12:50 AM I had the ute in to get the steering rack tightened, they fixed that problem but now the steering wheel when driving perfectly straight is off centre. Took it back to get them to check it out (And also replace the vertical door moulding on the drive's side pillar behind the door, which I have requested be fixed on the last 2 visit's and when I picked it up it was sitting correctly but by the time I got home the wind had got under it and it had come back out to which I found they had try to glue it on!!! ) anyway that's getting off the topic, so I get a call late Monday arfternoon and the service guy tells me the car is ready but they couldn't strighten the steering wheel that is as good as it gets and if they put it straight he said some about the steering wheel will just go off centre in the other direction.Im going back in on Saturday to get them to fix it because that to me seems like a load of But if someone could shed some light on the subject and tell me this guy is right I'd like to know.Anyhow, Happy New Year all. Seriously, I think the dealer is just lazy, and they are talking about the splines on the steering column, if they take the wheel off and put it back on 1 slpine CW or CCW then it will be too far out the other way. What they need to do is get under the car and adjust each tie rod end on the rack by the same amount to 'fine tune' the steering wheel. They should have done this when they did the wheel alignment. The worry is if they dont do it right they will put the alignment out, which is why they should have done it when it was still all conected up to the alligner...sounds like they are a bunch of slackers... Cam Member 397 Member For: 22y 2m 26d Location: Brisbane Posted 31/12/03 01:37 AM Share Posted 31/12/03 01:37 AM I have thge exact same problem.I never had any problem with my settering untill the 15,000 service. At the service they did something to the rack. When I collected the car stright ahead was achieved with the wheel about 5 degrees to the right. It still drove fine and handling didnt seem to be effected but I fond it annoyting ot have to drive with tht wheel 5 degrees to the right.I took it back to them twice to fix that problem and they were "unable" to fix it.On the third trip back they finally fixed it - stright ahead was stright ahead. BUT now the car was continually pulling to the left - quite noticably (even my wife commented). So back to them 2 more time - both times they did an alignment and both times the problem was exactly the same.So back for a third time (or sixth time really) and this time they rotated the tyres front to rear. Now the pull to the left is gone. BUT now stright ahead is actually 5 degrees to the left. aaaagggghhhh. The last trip was Monday this week. Its booked back in again in a fortnight (soonest loan car is availiable).Any suggestions on other that have had this problem would be appreciated. Guest Scootre Guests Posted 31/12/03 02:30 AM Share Posted 31/12/03 02:30 AM Take it to a pro wheel alignment place and ask them if they can fix it - and if not will they agree not to charge you (they are either pro's or not).Once fixed, present the bill to the dealer. Tell them they had their chance. If they give you aggro - go to FoMoCo.I'd also be going bloody ballistic. Screw them. If Ford can build it right, why can't they fix it right? My old man is taking it in as I am at work in Sydney and the dealer is located down home in Wollongong. I'd hate to be the service tech if he tries to give him the run around that this can't be rectified! I think it is absolutely pathetic that I was told this to begin with. I will let you know how I go Cam Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/8229-steering-wheel-not-straight/#findComment-78034 Share on other sites
