I have been running stock gears in a built motor for over 6 years. High 300's the whole time. Rev Limit is set to 6800. I don't bounce the limiter and haven't had any issues and as much as it pains me to admit it I agree with Jet. if your stuffing a built motor with big $'s parts do them. If it's a stocky that going to have a bit more punch save your $'s

This ^^^ When I built my motor I was less educated and I didn't do the gears - 60,000ks later and they are still running fine. Had I been a little more educated at the time I would've put the atomic pump in.

I agree that if you had the motor out then you should do it, if not then I wouldn't spend the money unless you are limiter happy...

I have atomic gears sitting in my garage.....but to big a job to warrant without putting a fresh engine in. I couldn't count how many times I've hit the limiter and all is still good. Mate on the other hand done his twice.

Would you say it has to do with the oil viscosity, how warm/cold the oil is and also the type of limiter hard vs soft?

hitting limiter with cold oil = deserves to blow motor

True, I think the mistake can be easily made by those that don't have an oil pressure or oil temp gauge though - simply relying on the engine temp gauge to know if its warm is dangerous as the oil takes a lot longer to be right up to temp

Maybe the guys with oil temp gauges log the time vs distance travelled until their oil gets to operating temp along with the type of oil used.

Will give the guys with no gauge a good idea of how long it actually takes of oil to get up to temp. Very different to water/coolant.
