hi all,

I am a new member and I bought my new xr6 turbo 3 weeks ago and it is such a awsome car and loving every minute of it UNTIL christmas eve I was coming home from the coast and a bloody  volvo driver turned in front of me and I hit her at 50 kms

and I heard when cars are in a smash they are just not the same but I don't have the option to sell her yet as I will loose to much money.

but just wondering if anyone has done the same thing and how they car is after the crash..... mine had 2500 kms on it

I am hoping to get her back maybe march some time so I can injoy her again

ps. sorry about the bad news. I know nobody wants to hear things like that ;)

that's terrible.

At that speed, I can imagine it did a bit of damage for sure. Did you hit squre on, or only one corner of your car hit hers?

In general, if the chassis isnt too badly effected (even if it is it may be repairable) then as long as a good person fixes it, it should be fine.

The thing to watch for is to be sure it states in writing on the receipt that the repairs have a lifetime warrantee. Most will do this.

Ive had a small front end problem in my old car that was fixed, but every 10,000km or so one wheel would move a bit (actually back a bit, so the front of the front tyres wasnt actually equal) and the result was at 80kmh the steering wheel shook, and a bit of uneven tyre wear.

When I got new tyres each time, they guy was nice enough to belt things back into place for me, but said the panel beater really should fix it properly.

So ensure you are covered against little things like that. If in doubt, insist on it being hand written on the receipt that problems related to the fix will be fixed cost-free for as long as you own the vehicle, if not longer.

Its also possible that if you hit it just right you could have bent the chassis badly. Without a pic its hard to tell how bad your car copped it. If you did a really good job on the chassis, then they may even declare the car a write-off and you would score a new car as the car is so new.

After you have it all fixed (I assume by her insuracne company: be sure you get 3 or so quotes from GOOD repairers to send them) then if you have any concerns (such as they forced you to use a repairer you dont want to use) then go see if a repairer you trust will give it an inspection the day you pick it up, for $50 or something. So you can check to see if they took any shoddy shortcuts.

If you are in Vic, I know a good repairer or two. One in Camberwell is not too bad and well known.

If he's insured, he doesn't need to run around getting quotes. He only needs to get it fixed. His own policy will look after it under the so-called "knock for knock agreement" between insurance companies.

Yeah that's great, so long as you dont care about the quality of the fix.

Me, I prefer to have input on which repairers do the work. When insurers "settle the books" at the end of each time period, its in both their interests for both companies to reduce the repair costs as much as possible.

They do this by using their "recommended repairers" unless you push for otherwise.

These recommended repairers are forced to do work at a set rate which is below the normal rates they would charge. The way they get a little bit of extra money back is to do as little with as low cost parts as possible.

You will often get a VERY different result on a repair job if you compare a "done under recommended quote" job vs a "costed as per actual cost" type quote.

Id prefer it get fixed properly with good parts etc first time. Having a lifetime warrantee thanks to the insurer for using the recommended insurer sucks of you have to bring the car back multiple times to get the car fixed up (to the standards it would have been done to first time if they did it right).

Ive learnt all this the hard way, and made quite a few contacts in the industry.

Do you think insurers say "leave it all to us, we will get your car fixed" out of the goodness of their hearts? I dont think so. Its to save money pure and simple.
