I forgot to mention

There is NO SUCH THING AS A QUOTA

NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL (Political suicide)

The only thing I have ever seen a quota on is Random Breath tests. That is where it is expected that a HWP crew will do a minimum of 40 tests per shift.

If there was a quota there would be a lot of HWP Police being moved out and put back into GD's. Quite honestly there are a significant portion of HWP Police that only write out about 2 to 4 tickets per day. That is less than 90 tikets per month.

I, prefer to give value for money so I aim (my own personal target) of 200 to 300 per month. I get nothing extra for it, no pat on the back, no promotion just the satisfaction that I, as a taxpayer, am giving other taxpayers value for money.

If every taxpayer funded authority was like that, then there wouldn;t be crises in Govt. managed bodies.

Agree with all but the suggestion that HWP are more motivated to find law breakers. Their stats suggest contact with a higher numb er of individuals. but having worked in GDs, Detectives, anti-crime, Traffic and Tac Ops Iwould say that your average copper, no matter what their area, is neither more nor less motivated than the other. I know HWP patrols are far more inclined and motivated in the traffic law enforcement area, but have seen quite a few of that ilk that avoid criminal type work like the plague.

I know that's not what you're suggesting here though. GDs do go from job to job every day, but its not a lack of motivation to find law breakers, they have neither the time nor the resources to be 'pro active' as our bosses keep telling everyone we are.

HWP (or traffic branches) can get out their and be pro-active, move about and set their own work agendas to a certain degree but I've found that's the luck of the draw rather than motivation.

Being polite is the only way to go. Once got pulled over for speeding. I was going 28km/h over the 110 limit, and being polite and apoligetic etc got me booked for the 0-15km/h bracket instead. Police can be fair, and the only ones that think they can't are abviously the ones that get agro for doing something they know is wrong (I've actually been cautioned before, for speeding, but being polite helps). Just gotta love watching those Police, Camera, Action shows when you see how agro some luny's get. Gotta love the "Pick up the paper from the road or I'll have to fine you".. ;)

A actually came across an XR6 (couldn't see a turbo badge) highway patrol car (had the fluro orange going) here in Canberra, on the monaro highway about a week ago. I was sitting on 85-90 in the 80 zone going north. He came up the Fyshwick ramp doing atleast 100km/h, no lights no nothing. Overtaking cars like there was no tomorrow (or maybe the other cars just saw him in the rear vision and took the foot off the gas). Must have been near end of shift time, cause he wen't in the general direction of civic (as I was) and I quickly lost site of him. Only thing that came to my head then was "Hrm, maybe he's driving a XR for the first time and he's enjoying it" ;)

You may not get out of a ticket by being polite BUT you may get a ticket of a lower bracket ( Under 15 instead of Over 15)

Have to agree - a "mate" does a lot of interstate highway driving, which is downright boring (and therefore dangerous) at 100kmh. Been pulled over a few times, and being polite has seen a few of those converted to warnings and virtually all of them downgraded.

Maybe saying nothing may have saved a ticket or two - I, er he'll never know - but in the end these "transactions" have been quick, aggro-free and haven't led to any further ramifications (like roadworthies, being trailed afterwards, etc).

I haven't a problem with HWP - they've got a job to do. I do have a problem with some of our posted limits, and I have a real problem with cameras set with zero tolerance and without the discretion of a person to make a judgement call as to what is more or less a technical breach (which is warning and/or downgrade territory) and what is dangerous.

YCL's post is spot-on in my book.

Krash

That was one funny piece of film.

That State Trooper read that driver like a book and it was awesome to watch!!

That scenario happens quite often.

VG. I know what you are saying and I agree with you. The only point I was making that HWP Police are working in a 'proactive only' type of area but there are motivated/demotivated types in ALL sections.

Plonky, there is such thing as a "quota" in Queensland - it is a pretty $hitty fact. Irks me and others no doubt to tears as there is no discretion up here because the traffic branch boys are working on their quota. And it doesn't help that up here they put the rejects of the Police Force (other Police say this!!) in traffic branch......
