Sweet.. gotta admit I don't often see the builder as the PM. Maybe the construction manager come that time. But a true PM sees a job from concept to completion. Builders come in around 80-90% through detailed design. Oversee the end of the design which gives them familiarity with the job, then build the thing. Basically appearing like they take over but the PM or client rep is still running around in the background (this is what I do). Someone has to keep the builder honest.

Shadowing is brilliant. That's great. If you are happy with your decision (obviously not made overnight) stick with it.

To put it this way:

builder knows he's gotta put a copper pipe on the wall and that he'll be delayed by 3 days if the pipe order doesn't turn up.

Project Manager knows why that pipe goes on that wall, which hydraulic service it is for, what pressure it contains, how it interacts with every other pipe on the f*cking site.

Real project managers need to understand basic electrical, hydraulics, access and mobility standards, access and egress requirements and we'll everything else going on the site so he knows that his client isn't being ripped off or paying for something 6 times the size it needs to be.

Yeah I understand, unfortunately, Adelaide (with the exclusion of the recent hospital and sahmri (which we mostly outsourced for unfortunately ) we don't have much ever big scale and all the stuff you just detailed in your last paragraph that the p.m knows is what the builder knows, here, as I've recently found out, pms are just guys who never leave the head office and don't know anything, they're usually Asian uni leavers who would know nothing more about construction than a check out chick. Hence why the builder is so imperative here .... Trust me, I looked into eastern states and overseas, and contemplated what to study etc, but Adelaide is probably where I'm staying for the foreseeable future so I am adapting to the climate here.

Kind of backwards in a way, even I said that to jet lol....but it's true of little old Adelaide lol

Be the change then fluff. People masquerading as PM's need to be shot.

I do suppose though that different states/companies etc give different names to the positions.

IE: what I am calling a PM sometimes gets referred to as a Clients Rep (someone the client puts on to ensure things go smooth).

No offence to builders, but most of the ones I know who are pretty switched on, go blank when you start talking head pressures for fire safety systems, storm water containment and lux levels required 1.5m off the ground assessed in 4 directions for CCTV cameras to operate at night.

I don't think Adelaide is backwards. I think they are just giving different names and roles to positions.

I think we're tight karnts personally bahahaha

We just don't wanna pay money for pms and builders

Maybe he's a biased trade, but the clear impression I get from tranny and the guys in sa is that the builder is the last point of call on most of our jobs, if he doesn't catch the fault then the pm certainly won't coz he's never doing anything except budgets etc. I think your right, these kind of pms aren't doing the job title justice and it's not fair, most of them don't even go to site really, don't deal with clients direct, and only the company boss making sure sh*ts on time and in budget ....jet being in fire does help heaps, and he has even said (from a site supervisor of a trades perspective), he's never ever ever seen or heard a pm tell him anything to do with his trade and guys or work being inaccurate or not on timeframe, it all comes from the builder picking it up there and then .... Which is a bit sh*t, but yeah, I have no doubt there are a select few good pms here who do fulfil they're role well like u, and if I can do that one day I will be stoked, hopefully a change for the better

f*ck me.. can I be a PM in Adelaide?

That does piss me off. PM should be living in the site office. Maybe it's just a different background thing as my study wasn't town planning. But I also like to know the client isn't paying for marble and getting speckled concrete.

I can understand jet being involved with the builder at his point of involvement the builder will have possession of site. But if something makes it past the builder to the PM and he picks up a f*ck up on an inspection it should be fire and brimstone on the builder to get it right, which generally results in those particular emotions being filtered down.

Just in my role.. I know things happen on sites and sh*t always costs more. But if a builder tells me there is gonna be cost overrun he better show me why and then give a damn good follow up of what he did to try to stop it being a problem before it was one.

That sh*t has full on brainwashed my cousin, I saw straight through it. My chick mate is a nutritional scientist, reckons all the stuff in their products can be bought for like 100 a month if you're really that way inclined. But it's the biggest scam, stuff that. It is no doubt, 110% pyramid scheming any way you look at it and fully illegal. Of course you're going to feel better and lose weight if you eat perfectly healthy and only eat 3 times a day with 2 fasting days for god sake.

Oh and WMYFG, getting back on the forums. Gunna be the father of a lux pack mystic ute next week :D
