Would suck if I ended up out of work, specially given how little geology work there is out there at the moment. I have a finance degree I could use if I need to, but no experience in the field, so would have to start at the bottom again on a 3rd of my current pay. Would probably end up having to sell the GT :(

Really? We struggle to get a decent geologist since the mines take all the good ones.. We currently use a uni professor who contracts when he's not teaching.. A year or so ago there were heaps of jobs being advertised. Got a mate used to work with us who got made redundant last year who still hasn't found a job yet, and he's a good geo too. What sort of work does old mate do for you guys?

Geo gets to interpret some pretty decent cores and tell us what we are up against.. Just for large cuts/piers/piling/stability etc..I did do a fair bit of that stuff at uni.. But Alas.. I lost my Rock Lens.. So gotta pay someone else to do it..I think scoring 51.7% in geology was the happiest day of my life.. Because it meant I didn't have to take that class again.. Sadly enough I've got a few mates in the same boat (Not Geo's).. Lost full time jobs 12 months ago and are now floating contract to contract.. 3 months here, 1 month there.. No one is putting on permanents at the moment.. Hoping that the gumbyments decide they need to win votes and start spending big again soon.. We merge soon with another company and they've laid off about 8 staff now ahead of the merge..I've gone from loudmouth/obnoxious/lazy.. To busy and quiet as a church mouse.. Too many are stuck in "more jobs than people" mindset and demand crack pipe money for crack head qualifications/experience levels.

All the low level staff jumped to private to chase the big money.. And now it's all dried up on them over here and they take to each other like a pack of dogs whenever a govy job comes back up.. Passed with flying colours. He's now officially graduated (even has the piece of paper to prove it) to normal baby status.
