WMMFG was reading some of the comments in this thread where BCB and Keith talked about things that "weren't feasible", like closing our borders... hindsight's a bit of a carnt hey fellas 😝

Perhaps you need to read back a bit... just because I stated that closing borders would be difficult, doesn't mean that I didn't have a nuanced point of view behind that that said that states/countries etc can do it, but they're not actually closing their borders in terms of stopping absolutely everything. States still let transport of goods etc, they don't stop you if you're working across borders etc. Countries are just isolating people who happen to come through from international flights etc. To me, that's not "closed" borders, that's careful screening.

The dipsh¡t tried to return it to one of our local foodlands (Drakes) they refused to refund it, because he is one of the foookwits that has been causing major stress for the smaller supermarkets and pharmacies around the state. Not to mention the people who needed to get basic item's but shelves had been stripped dry by panicking selfish greedy cops.

If influenza infections and fatalities were to be tracked on a chart and updated in real time and broadcast continually from every news site on earth and flashed across the length and breadth of social media as per Covid-19, there would be unending panic every year.

 

Many have mocked the comparison of Covid-19 with the flu, but there is a comparison.

Covid-19 is still a small thing compared to influenza, though it is yet to be seen how they will compare in the end.

 

Worldwide, about 1 billion people contract the flu annually, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, and about 500,000 die during the flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

That is about 1370 flu deaths per day or 57 per hour.

It appears that influenza is not as easily spread as coronavirus, but that influenza is very contagious is obvious by the massive numbers of infections annually, one billion!

 

this is not to make light of the coronavirus.

It is a major problem and requires serious attention and the application of much wisdom.

But there has to be a proper perspective.

We do live with death.

It is reality, and we must learn how to deal with the coronavirus epidemic without pulling down the very fabric of a modern society.

 

as of today there has been a total of 2,077,789 infections and 135,000 deaths worldwide.

we are only just over 4 months into it (the pandemic) and if you were to do a quick calculation for the next 8 months at current rates of infection and death, then the outcome for 12 months would be approximately 6,233,367 infections and 405,000 deaths (probably going to be much lower because infection and death rate falling in many country's)

that's lower than the infection rate and death toll for influenza........... just sayin

Not really feeling sick and do not want to be..but if you are feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.
Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that's what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not needed right now.

@bloodycrashboy So far we have seen children and younger people and completely healthy middle aged individuals now start to die in many countries. 
now keep in mind the numbers are probably understand due to inadequate testing in places like America and the lies we know came from China. 
as far as positive tests go yes the number is around 2mil, but immunologists estimate it’s closer to 4mil given we have almost no luck in getting actual numbers from places like India, the Middle East and vague numbers from China. Chile is listing their dead as “recovered cases” because they technically aren’t sick anymore... that’s the level of accuracy we have here due to limited testing and facilities. 

The spread would also be far worse if other countries didn’t put in restrictions as they have now, like Australia. look at New York. Mass Graves... do you see mass graves due to the flu every year? 

The sheer fact is the virus, with medical intervention, is only slightly more deadly than the flu at this stage yes. But even in flu season peak we don’t see 60,000 people in one capital city needing a ventilator at once! 
why? Because the flu is nowhere near as contagious or as deadly with no medical intervention, it sucks, but it’s just not. 
due to the nature of what this virus attacks, the lungs, medical intervention is necessary in 20% of cases and a significant amount of those WILL require a ventilator to survive, no not just the old either. 
 

Despite what you may think... death IS avoidable, this isn’t the 1800s and we don’t have to see thousands die a senseless death because we have the knowledge and faculties to avoid that... which is what we’re trying to do by flattening the curve. We understand almost 95% of Australians will at some stage get the virus, but if it’s not at once, most of us will survive. If it’s at once, doctors and nurses get to pick who is going to receive life saving intervention and who doesn’t. It becomes WW3 and that’s senseless and catastrophic for the sake of you being able to dine in and get your avocado on toast in the morning. 
 
it’s sad that it would probably take people like you and Trump to have your wife left to die with a bottle of oxygen in a corridor of a packed hospital, when she could have lived, because she was in her 50s not in her 20s and a doctor decided she was not worthy of treatment, to realise just how horrible and avoidable that is. 
 

So sorry you can’t go out side and resume your Normal Saturday morning coffee, or you might have to make some sacrifices financially for a while... but what would you prefer? A dead wife or some inconvenience?

 

why is it so hard for people to understand!!?!?!?
