neighbour crashes into a siblings parked car outfront causing $1100 damage about six months ago, refused to speak to the cops or provide footage from their 3 cctv cameras which would have shown what happened (their car suddenly had a small dent with paint that was the same colour as my siblings car).

Just the other day the cops rang us saying they'd been robbed and wanted our security footage. they also blamed us for robbing them.

I love karma, you sit back and bad things happen to the bad people. the cops aren't going to do anything about this. I sincerely hope if they were robbed that items of significant value were taken.

Just watch out they don't try to get some revenge on your house since they think you got revenge on them for the car.  Keep that CCTV working and cover all angles on all sides!

hahaha currently there is a 4mp 2.8mm to 12mm motorised varifocal camera pointed directly at them. rest are 3mp of various fixed lense sizes :P

5 in total is only giving ~8 days of recording time at 24/7 record (I wanted to test capacity) but its going to be switched onto motion event recording very soon. currently it sends very compressed low res snapshots to a gmail account when motion is triggered -incase the recorder got stolen.

I'm currently thinking about a camera setup. I've done no research and as such I'm somewhat a noob as to what would suit my needs. I'm thinking three for the front will suffice and just one for the back.

I already have a pc that can support another 18TB or more of data with current sata availability so I suppose I'm covered there. I can set up software without any difficulty. I can install hardware without any difficulty.

Just this very minute I've had to call the police as there was a disturbance across the road from my house. There was an intoxicated man and approximately 10 individuals in the local vicinity.

There was a scuffle that was resolved fairly quickly that I recorded with a zoomed in gs5 front camera in the dark. It was not very clear but showed the details.

Also my kids are beating each other up and I would like to know who the instigator/askingforasmackinator is as they disperse quick af when my squeaky floors give them warning to my arrival.

I ran a PCNVR recording solution for a year. My advice is don't unless the pc is 100% dedicated to that task and nothing else and even then there will still be swearing as I just don't think windows is meant for this. linux ftw.

4mp minimum res h.265 cameras, dedicated h.265 recorder and to be honest I quite like the uniview and hikvision gear just don't get the overseas hikvision gear as you cannot update the firmware and its really not that much more to get aussie stock locally in my experience.

choose lense size carefully, all of mine are different sizes.

edit: also h265 is interesting - something about same quality for half the bitrate compared to h.264. the h.264 gear is all really cheap.

all good, was going to write more but realized it's not the thread. Feel free to PM me if you got questions but I think I pretty much covered the main points.

After almost a decade, finally able to see this in my own home:

barXPEy.png

Speeds are liveable, I'm on least 4.5km of phone cable in the hills here and getting 6.8Mbps down (or about 0.75 Megabytes per second) which is close to the max download speed of ADSL1 (no ADSL2 ports free, I waited 4 months).  Video uploads like car cruises I'll be jumping on my phone 4G hotspot though, only got 0.33Mbps upload over ADSL.  Phone can smash out 20Mbps upload even with only 2 bars of 4G signal.

The real advantage of ADSL is not speed but quota - 100GB plan to start whereas my phone plan is only 6GB a month!

Wireless NBN will be the next step but the ISP weren't able to get any sort of ETA for my area.
