Hey guys so looking at upgrading my sound system in my FG sedan.

I've got a big amp and couple of 12" subs lying around from my old car which will prob go in but biggest concern is what speakers are people using and hows the quality. I had sony 6 inch splits in my BA and was surprised by how good they actually were.

Basically what speakers have you used front and rear aswell as amp to run them all?

Thinking optimistically I'd like to get all this stuff for around the $500 mark so roughly brands around this price

Thanks guys

500 will get you some nice equipment-

budget 200-250 on speakers and the rest on decent cable and maybe a bit of sound deadening

try ebay america (cheaper than aus by far- even with delivery)

focal/ mb quart (usually like a decent amount of power fed to them though)/ infinity/ alpine (type r).

get on the web and read some reviews to see what people prefer...

+1 for budget for sound deadener. I did 1 door this weekend, used 2 sheets of dynamat and a few small pieces of 3mm MDF. This did the outer & inner skin and used the MDF to seal up the service holes (duct taped it in there), taped all the wires down and secured all the rattly bits. Well worth the time and money. the difference in sound is very noticeable. I'd leave the factory rears in and get better quality fronts as the you wont really hear the them.

I have Alpine type X pro front splits with an Alpine PDX F6 amp running them Bi-amped and I'm really happy with them. No rear speakers. Although they are a fair bit more than your budget.

I'd get a 2ch amp about 75w RMS, a decent set of splits (what he ^ said are all good brands and look at hertz too) and 4 sheets of dynamat. Run factory rears off your source unit.

I put the new Rockford fosgate t3 splits in the front. Brought them off eBay in America I think they cost about 450 shipped. But that's better that the $1100 that they wanted over here. The sound deadening in the fgs is pretty good so I'd spend the money on good splits and then sound Deaden when you have more cash. Also just so you know mb quart is now made in china. The company split and the two owners went there separate ways. One wanted to make more money at the cost of quality. The other guy wanted to keep the quality and is now called maestro. A mate owns a car audio shop ( that's how I know lol)

Thanks for the input so far guys. That $500(ISH) is moreso for speakers and a small amp to run them. Cables will be budgeted for spearately. As for sound deadening, I dunno if I can justify it? I certainly see the benefits for it but given how much it would cost and the extra effort involved I don't see it as being worth it. My BA had an alright system and I didn't have too many issues with no sound deadening and I've seen mates run DB comps with dynamatted everything and I don't think its worth what it costs.

So do people agree changing the back speakers is not worth it? Or just some cheapish speakers and power them from the ICC only and just run the amp to the front speakers?

I just remembered I have some 6" Type S's in the shed that I had in my Dad's ute when I drove that around on my P's so I'll save some coin and they can go in the rear doors.

Im not going ahead with this any time soon because car needs to be lowered and is getting gauges first, just wanted a starting point from what people use in these cars because there is a million review online. Type R's are probably the go so far but even at 110rms is excessive but I imagine their clarity is pretty good!

Might have to go to a car audio shop and have a listen, I guess that's the easiest way to make a comparison because some of the brands mentioned so far are a bit out of my price range.

Also whats people's view on Kicker, JL audio and the like in the mid-range category?

Jl Audio's are bad, if you can afford spending a bit extra go for the MM series Polks and ill guarantee you it will give you the biggest smile considering your running their 125rms per channel digital amp. :)
