Give this a try - might let you know how close you are to the exchange for starters

If you're too far away then you're too far away, but if not push for the other options.

I checked my number on the packet lookup site and it shows no adsl2 ports, but ADSL 1 is doable if transposition is done.

The issue was not lack of ports but noise on line so Telstra told me, they were attempting to resolve that but then I got a letter in the mail saying EAD...

extra annoying is I paid to have the phone and power cables run in 6 months ago to replace the collapsed existing conduit.

Cable length according to original Telstra Tech that connected landline is about 4km, he said anywhere from 3 to 8 megabit.  Out in rural areas they use thicker gauge wire to reduce attenuation so it performs like you are closer than in the burbs for a given loop length.

I'd be happy with 3 Mbps...

Try a different provider - they'll tell Telstra to fix the line ;)

Yeah have applied to internode - haven't heard anything negative yet, have gotten "order received" and "welcome to Internode" emails.  So far so good...but I expect a call where I have to convince them to hook it up anyway!
