It's not a pleasant time to be a Civil Engineer in the Mining/Construction Industry in WA. Market was flooded with so many they are almost a disposable commodity at the moment.

Yep. Same even in major construction mate. Fully qualified engineers are applying for drafting jobs just so they can keep an income.

We where recruiting a couple of long term maint planners earlier this year, we had laid off MD's and Similar applying. Far too many big fish in the small pond and nowhere near enough qualified people for core roles.

It's legitimately a concerning time to be in the industry. I'm just grateful for having a job at the moment! Makes me wish I'd saved hard over the last 5 years instead of pissing money away on cars I no longer own...

I genuinely feel for anyone that started during the boom and was lead to believe it was the norm. I see it a lot with Grads that can't understand they are not longer worth what they where 2yrs ago.

Same with any support role (HSE/Enviro Etc Etc) if you're not directly influencing production or able to provide cost reduction you're not in a happy place at the moment.

Having said that any industry driven by a commodity price and the global market will go up and down so you need to have a plan to ride it out when it does go down.

^yep. Hence I'm happy to hold onto my current job and ride it out until I either get made redundant or the market picks up again. My company pays pretty well, so I want to try make the most of that and save as much as I can while I'm here.

12 hour swings for me, 1 hour commute to site/camp (2 hours total) per day.<br />so essentially 14 hour days ... actually affecting me quite a lot now - my sleeping pattern is screwed, health (physical and mental) is suffering, and general morale (for the small few still not at the camp 5 minutes away) is low / ZFG spec
