I think that the dole should only be given out as food/clothing/fuel/accommodation vouchers.

It should be illegal for a dole recipient to use my tax dollars to buy alcohol, smokes, or play the pokies/gamble.

The dole should only be a stop-gap measure while the person is between jobs.

If the dole bludgers cant get a job within a 1 year period, they should be automatically enlisted into the army/navy/air force for the total period that they have been on the dole to pay back what they have been given!

as far as the pension is concerned, I agree with Whinginator, you'd better start saving for your retirement NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also, can the politicians pension, it is a slap in the face for all Australians as to how much these bastards pay themselves at our expense.

They are public servants not returned service men/women.

I agree totally that any form of welfare should be a safety net not a lifestyle choice.

However, not everyone is a dole bludger particularly when you are over 40.

Whilst I haven't taken a cent from the government I understand how difficult it is

to get employment over that age. Been there, working until 70 as Retard said is a dream for some.

So we send them of to do some soldiering ? Easy to be narrow minded and self righteous

cause you are doing your bit.

If I went on the dole I would take me nearly 70 years to come close recouping my taxes.

Just sayin you can't make sweeping generalisations

I was never taught to financially savvy by my parents (they were hippies), only just started thinking about my future at 32.

I have no faith I will get a pension and I cannot get my hands on my military super until I'm 70.

So for me owning my home and getting money in my other super is my course of action.

Feel sorry for guys and gals that are savvy and get a divorce and lose a sh*tload. Almost went through that 3 years ago.

Plus I want to travel whilst I can walk.

Never enough coin.

I am well past 40, and on my way to 60.

There is no way that I want to be still working at 70.

If I lost my job now, and could not find myself another job in 12 months (because I'm sooooooo old)

I would be more than happy to serve my country in the armed forces.

Did you realise that Australia is one of the very few country's in the world that you can remain on the dole indefinitely?

There has to be change to the current welfare system to weed out the lazy and the cheaters.

Problem is any tougher dole measures to weed out the cheaters (aside from being ridiculously expensive) would also impact those who are honest.

Delicate line in the sand here and one that I am glad I'm not in government to deal with.

Personally I can think of nothing worse than a bunch of people with guns protecting our country who didn't actually want to do that.

I have zero answers for our dole/pension/welfare problems. Solely because it's too easy to look from the other side of the coin.

I wasn't taught to be financially savvy by my folks, but I watched my mother's spending habits burn a family business twice.

I got given some advice when I was 18 and earning sweet f*ck all that if I could put aside an extra 50 bucks a week in my super for my first 10 years of employment it would be awesome by the time I retired.

Yeah wasn't wrong but not many people that age will part with 50 bucks a week.

People do need to be a bit more responsible for their long term futures but there so far has never been a requirement for these people to be financially responsible in their old age.

Without pensions how will nursing homes get paid? Most of those take around 80% of the residents pension.

Be f*cked if not only being accountable for my future if I have to start doling out to keep my elderly relatives looked after.

Now that is more balanced. One question though in what capacity could us oldies contribute to the ADF

Marketing / admin etc Certainly no fan of cannon fodder based on ageism

Im a tradesman (sheetmetal worker) and could most certainly work in this field for the armed forces.

A company I worked for built the Fremantle class patrol boats.

Or I could teach in my field.

As far as cannon fodder is concerned, the armed forces are not going to put geriatrics on the front line

so what would the geriatrics contribute ?You talk about yourself.

Geriatrics span a bigger a span than you. What are your solutions for the rest of them
