"Captain Retard" Member 1,417 Member For: 10y 7m 22d Gender: Male Location: Shellharbour NSW Posted 04/11/14 07:47 AM Share Posted 04/11/14 07:47 AM Yes stamp duty sucks alright, just don't pay it twice like we had to.We bought a investment property about 8 years ago and put it in both our names as we were both working.Well 2 years ago the wife took a redundancy and got a part time job.But she doesn't earn more than 22 grand a year so doesn't pay tax.This left us in a position where I could claim a tax return on only my half of the property and my wife could claim none which effectively halved our tax return.The only way round it was for me to buy my wife's half so I could claim the full tax return.That meant I had to pay stamp duty on the property again!Just something to be aware of when buying investment property.
