Engine Failure!

Hi guys,

I'm new to this site and this is my firt post on the forum. have a 2008 fg xr6t with 6sp auto gearbox. It has a plazmaman 1000hp intercooler, hurricane turbo back exhaust 5" dump pipe 3.5" back, turbo upgrade garret gt 35/40, walpro internal fuel pump, process west external fuel pump and surge tank, custom engine and transmission oil cooler and 75lb injectors. These modifications were done buy BTA motorsports in sydney and the car made about 380rwkw at 20psi on BP ultimate and I also had a tune for 95RON fuel as I am now living in karratha WA and this is all that is available. Since I had the mods done I have had trouble getting a linear acceleration and the car had a rev surge even at idol. I sent my flash tuner back to BTA who had a go at tuning it out but was unsuccessful, and he advised me that he had trouble with these 75lb injectors and to purchase a set of ID1000. There is one tuner in town here who has a pretty sound rep, Barth Bro's, and he is familiar with my car so I decided to purchase the injectors and have him tune it. Anyway he reckons he has done one pull on the dyno, a hose has come off the boost actuator, over boosted to 35psi and basically blown the engine. Ali at BTA tells me this has never happened to him and that it is operator error. Would just like to know your opinion on this and a recommendation on parts for a rebuild. I was originally looking at selling the car towards the end of the year so I don't want to go over the top but if I have to rebuild it I may aswell put some good bits in it. I would like to see the car make 400rwkw safely, is this feasable on 95RON. This is the first time I have owned a modified car so any way you can help would be greatly appreciated!

Mate if I was you id get a quote for rebuild of a known tuner back around perth, make the mechanic at fault pay up if possible and never go back!!

Sorry to say but you should have got on here B4 tuning and mods, we could have pointed you in the right direction from the start.

I work in Port Hedland myself and can tell up around here its all about $$$$$ and this is all this Mechanic had in mind. I dont think he had any idea from the start and was just saying yes for the cash now it has gone bang he will be rubbing his hand together because it means more work for him thinking you are cashed up with no idea. Goodluck mate all the best

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear this, its really sh*t when your pride and joy goes bang in the hands of someone else. I work in Port Hedland myself and have worked in karratha and sorry to say (also I dont mean to sound rude by pointing out the obvious) but it was a mistake to take your car up there, the hot weather mixed with sh*t fuel quality that comes from bad storage environments is not a place for a high performance car, especially when these guys are not accustomed to the regular tuning and building of Turbo cars. (they deal mainly with cammed HSV's as v8's dont get affected by the heat so much and that's pretty much the main car base up there).

My advice would be to send the car off to an independant party to ascertain what the cause of the problem was and then if he is at fault and accredited drag his name through the mud until he pays up. Unfortunately its not just the miners and FIFO workers that are only up there for the money.

Hope it works out, I wouldn't be aiming for 400rwkw on 95 up there mate, in the peak of summer your car will be pinging off its head on boost. However a good engine base would be to go to Atomic and purchase a rebuild kit, or buy a long engine from Brad.

Leigh

to be fair, if this is the first time the mechanic has seen the car and a actuator hose blew off, it's not his fault

good luck, there's some good tuners in Perth

Sorry to hear that. I live in hedland and drove 1600kms past Barth to get my f6 tuned at XFT. He tuned it to where he was comfortable that I could drive it anywhere (use poor quality fuel) at anytime of the year. Sacrificed a few killer wasps but looked after my pocket. I've heard mixed reviews of BB and decided even though it's a huge pain in the arse to have to drive to Perth for a retune it is well worth it. Also they are not tuners, they are a machine shop with a dyno.

400kw on 95 and reliable will be big dollars.

If you want to mechanic/tune shop to pay for the repairs they did (And as Ratter said its not entirely their fault), you will need to first offer it to them to repair, if you then take them to court you will need to show that you you did this, there was another case recently that got dismissed because this option was not followed. My thoughts are if you don't want to or arent going to chase them to fix it and just want to put it back together as you are selling it. You will need to ascertain what exactly broke and what parts if any can be salvaged. In my opinion if you are going to sell it at the end of the year, throw it together with factory everything drive it till you want to sell it and be done with it. Doesn't make much sense to me to spend lots of $$ to build it to support power then flog it of in a few months time. Save your money for your next car. I would be chasing the dyno operator that broke it for repair at his cost. Has the operator offered anything or just basically said its broken?

Need a few more details to help answer the question.

At the very least, make sure he refunds you every dollar you've spent there. At the end of the day, he hasn't delivered you what you asked for so you're entitled to a refund.

As for repairing the engine, as above.
