htc use their own launcher and samsung have touchwiz these launchers took up alot of recources and were clunky and annoying at best, the biggest difference these days is manufacturers interpretation of android are much closer to googles "pure" AOSP, so as google refines android the result is a much slicker environment that manufacturers are modifying less and less, which is seeing updates roll out much sooner after google makes the source avalible.

5 years ago as soon as I got home I would unlock the device voiding the warranty and flash a custom rom. Last 2 phones, Z1 and an S6 I have not felt the need. Does everything I want it to, has all the little features that made custom roms worth while and has been significantly de junkified compared to previous generations. Large part of that is Android itself is infact a community project and google have taken notice of the little tweaks the developer community make and implement some of them. Infact alot of legit google developers are also part of the public community and frequent sites like xda developers ect, so they can trythings they cant at work that later make it into AOSP...

Its kinda like a ford rep hanging round here and going "hey these guys are doing X with great results so we should put it into production" which never fkn happens.

I'm with barnz. I used to feel the need to flash custom ROM's to my android devices to get the functionality I wanted (and couldn't come close to getting on IOS), but haven't felt the need with my Galaxy S5. Best thing with Android is that if you don't like the look of it, you can change it. You can even use different launchers and icon packs and make it look and feel like IOS.

CM was great until it got all commercialised as it was bought by an actual development company rather than being open source and community developed. :(

I ran CM on my Note 3 for about a year but got sick of battery life issues.

Just went back to an international samsung rom, as Australian carrier rom updates are weak. A decent launcher fixes most of my customisation needs and samsung gripes.

Did lol at the fact that CM nighties seem more stable that samsung ROMs!

Out of contract in April - thinking LG G5 or Nexus 6P. Can't seem to shake the thought though that a 6P will be sending my personal data to foreign governments...

I use to have an HTC and hated how the launcher kept hanging all the time. I then went with an S5(work phone) and that was okay for a while, but kept cracking the sh*ts as well cause of telstra bloatware.

I have since been using a one plus one which I got a half the price of a Samsung or iPhone. I have CM on there and it works the way I want it.

the only on going issue is that Chrome chucks a wobble every so often when using facesucks.....

 

Android has come a long way in the last few years. I would suggest that you try and get your hands on an S5/S6 which is on demo and have a play with the menus and stuff.

I have a work phone and a personal phone. I am constantly having my phone work fine with the Bluetooth in my car and cracking the sh*ts with my vivosmart.

I then run the CM updates which can be done on a daily basis(which I don't bother with). after the update, the bluetooth in the car plays up and the vivosmart works well.

Can't have the best of both worlds when using custom roms.

Am using the Note 5 and find it perfect - would have no problem recommending one.

 

Only proviso I'd have would be how invested you are in the Apple ecosystem - if you've got all your music and apps etc in itunes etc that you use constantly and all the gadgets round the house that work with the iphone then you'd need to decide if it's worth the switch/ditching whatever you've invested.
